Clone old hard drive to new hard drive?

[link to this post]

Hi,

My 80 gig hitachi has been great but it's time to move on. I've got W7 64bit on it and I'm really struggling with the size. I've got a 500 external but I'd rather have a bigger and faster disk.

However, I'd really rather not have to go through installing the OS, drives, proggies all over again. Is there a way I can just clone my old hard disk contents on to a new one and carry on just like before?

Thanks!
AG.

I also use Acronis TrueImage and have upgraded my hard disk twice. The software is worth buying as you can make regular backups of your partitions as well as clone the disk. You'll need v10 for W7.

You could also use > Pargon Free software http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/ works great in W7, i use it although have yet to restore an image yet!, there is also Marcium Reflect > http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp both popular Free Backup/Clone programs. Hope that helps, you may even also be able to Clone from your Hard Drive software..

There is a free edition of HDClone, which does as it's name suggests.

If you buy a Seagate drive you can access a version of Acronis on the Seagate website. Worked very well for me, replaced six-year-old Seagate with another as a precaution, pleased with both (and I keep the old one as emergency backup with op system still installed).

Don't go anywhere near the acronis [censored], it has disasterous effects on the system performance. (Despite me migrating my Win7 system to a hard disk more than twice as fast in benchmarks).

Start from scratch, it is much better.

You really should do that. smile

Well worth the cost of buying a spare disk.
