dell vostro 430 sound/hard drive problem

[link to this post]

I have recently just bought a dell vostro 430. I have tried playing sound on the computer, however it only works when i plug earphones into the socket. Do i need to purchase speakers in order to hear the sound?

Also, i have a usb hard drive and tried transferring some filse to the desktop which worked fine. However, when i try and transfer files from the desktop to the usb hard drive, it initially appears as though its saved. But as soon as i eject the hard disk and install it, the files i had saved disappears. I have tried this hard disk on other computers and works fine.

Any ideas?

I don't think those sort of tower units normally contain speakers so I guess you'll have to buy your own and plug them into the line-out socket.

Do you use the Windows icon thingy to safely remove the usb device? Perhaps it hasn't finished writing the data when you pull the connector out.

I can't think of why read/write to the drive works on some computers but only read works on your new one.

Are you dragging and dropping? All I can think of is that you are not dropping where you think you are.

You might need to provide a screenshot of what you are doing to check this out.

What do you mean by eject and install? Take the hdd out of the usb case and put it inside another pc?
