I bought an Acer Aspire One, load Linux Mint on to it and will do all you require, no problem! I paid ~£200 but was on at £150.

linux i would maybe go that way but alot of stuff i.e. software is for windows or apple systems
like your yahoo messager etc so that would put me off

Don't fancy Linux? You don't know what you're missing OK, how about this one or this one?
Recommend both brands!

There are linux alternatives for most things. For Yahoo Messenger and MSN I use Pidgin on linux - works fine, there are alternatives.

only netbooks offered so far and tbh i think they are kinda [censored]..
If its just very basic websites and some word stuff etc then yeah, your good to go with one but i had one for a short time and took it back for a refund, it was using the Atom N450 and it fell over playing videos from youtube. was useless.
For £350 you can get a 15" laptop that has a better CPU and more RAM that will handle videos etc with no issues
this here:

Bargin right there
or this, not as good, cheaper but will still do the job

but the emachines is better

hey,
thanks for all the great advice, got myself this one in the end, however i got it from comet for £269.
Only question now is would I be wasting my money upgrading the ram from 1gb to 2gb?
cheers

The upgrade is well worth the twenty quid.

ok then the questions are then do i go for the faster memory or the slower memory?
I'm thinking slower memory is less likely to fail on me..to give me less problems overall.
Also how do i find out what memory is currently being used in my netbook all windows lets me is its 1gb in size.

Use the Crucial site for the new memory
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model...
£18 for 2GB and has a lifetime guarantee.
If you access the site using your Netbook you can use the ScanMySystem and that will tell you more.

ok thanks, just hope its easy to upgrade the memory then

On my Samsung N150 there is a cover on the base with a screw holding it. I took that off, unclipped the 1GB module and replaced it with the 2GB. About 1 minute

Add delivery to that and it comes out at £22.50 for 2 day service
Crucial charge £3 so it comes out cheaper at £21

If it has a seal over the screw then yes it may - but if not you can always reverse it if there is a problem.
But have a read of teh manual too ...
Dell allow certain upgrades to laptop and desk/tower machines without voiding their warranty hopefully Asus take the same positive attitude.

I wouldn't have thought this would invalidate the warranty, but while looking around for the answer I noticed someone said they had to upgrade the bios to accommodate the extra gig, so watch out for that.

well upgrade the bios from 801 to 904. Now just got to wait for the 2gb of ram and install it hopefully it goes smoothly
