Hardware or Software?

For about a week ive had a problem that seems to happen every two days or so and ONLY! when watching videos on dual screen where windows would crash the screen would just go blank and i would have to hit the reset button and windows would load up normally.

Today tho it crashed slightly differently causing a BSOD and a memory dump and Hard Disk Sentinal claims the new hard disk had a spin error which maybe caused by a Power spike. Now i dont think its the hard disk i think its driver related on a few accounts.

1. If it was hard drive surely with it being the master drive i would be seeing more than just a random crash now and then.

2. The Drive is a new The Seagate® Barracuda® 7200.12 1.5TB. Yes i know drives can go down at any age but i really dont think its the case here.

3. out of all the crashes which have been 5 or 6 only one has created a BSOD and in the event manager it stated that ... Display Driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has recovered sucessfully.

I have reinstalled the latest ATI Drivers 11.2, I have changed the Power Converter that converts to SATA and also changed the lead its being fed from on the PSU and just incase i have ordered a new PSU which i was gonna do later on in the year when i upgrade to X4 or X6 anyway this is the one i have ordered...

I dont need anything majorly expensive a standard 850watt will do me upto now a standard 700watt has.

i will also be running Seatools if i can get it to detect any drives lol

Im just running this by people to see if i may have missed something, with my health being as bad as it is and my meds that im on my memory and mind isnt as sharp as usual.

Need to know which gfx card. In fact, why not post your system including operating system.

My guess without the extra info is either:

1. Lack of power / wrong settings / bad driver / firmware (on gfx).

2. Possible overclock issue. You didn't mention an overclock, so assuming no.

There might be some issue between RAM, drive cache and gfx due to the dual monitor thing, but I doubt it. Post your spec, and if nothing else there might be some oddity or known issue that pops up.

i know it sounds daft turns out its a hard disk failure.... A drive thats 3 weeks old is going back.

Not long after posting this the problem reoccured except this time the drive made a loud clunk and a log in a program i used called HDSentinal showed a Spinup error on the drive. I ran 2 seperate diagnostics and failed.

I have since done a low level format and the diagnostics pass but im returning it to overclockers underwarrenty and gonna state the sales of goods act. I will provide them with the log i have to of the spin failure.

A dodgy drive doesn't explain a problem specific to a dual monitor crash. Unless you have a lack of memory / gfx, and the swapfile was getting overly involved (drive thrashing), I can't see why the drive would cause this directly.

Not really daft. If a drive is defective it's likely to go wrong pretty quick. If it's a few years old you can probably expect it to carry on working for a long time to come.
