HDMI cable question

I have a newish laptop running Win7 and a fairly nippy processor. I also get an average of >40Mbps from my Virgin broadband connection. If I connect this laptop to my HD enabled TV via HDMI, will it broadcast in HD from IPlayer etc. or do I need to do anything else? I've read somewhere that screen resolution can be problematic.

If by 'broadcast' you mean display like any other monitor, then yes.

I used to watch live "net" footie with a 4 metre scart connector linking up my 42 inch Panny Plasma tv, but the connector packed up after about 6 months for some reason, probably a broken pin, or crack in the wire

It will "broadcast" fine though i would usually look at overscan settings when hooking up a TV if you are seeing a blackbox around the picture.
