Network cable woes

[link to this post]

I have this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&...

2 of them in my network 1 is working fine still but the other is acting up and will only connect at 100Mbps and not 1Gbps anymore.

I have checked the cable with a multi meter for breaks and its fine.

So im stummped at the moment.

What esle could be wrong?

Are the network cards configured to operate at 1Gbps? I've found occasionally you need to force it into that mode... Do you have up to date drivers installed? Are both devices actually matched foe 1Gbps?

yes on all counts.

I tried another network cable and it works at a gig as it should

Forcing 1gbps does not work and still only connects at 100mbps

is it the thing the 2nd reply on the bottom of the posters piece.

crossover cable or not.

are the colours of the cores the same at each end or not. Is it the same layout as the good one.

Bad as check at the factory but best i can find if not the kit as does work with one lead.

How will you fix it - cut the plugs off and put new ones on?

Not the crossover thing, did not read it right. did work at some point, clever wires changing themselves. Or was it the fairies or Harry potter.

Teach me for not reading it right. prattt!

Never logged in hours ago, first time.

Not saying you are wrong, put bits of cable straight though and did work, good bets a wire has gone but you tested so a bit odd one this.

I tried on google, bit of a blank.

ok one more search.

100Mbs need 4 wires. 1Gb all 8.

interference as well so maybe shielding has gone.

ebay are good. I thrown a mouse for £5 away and £1.35 for 4 AAA batteries from hong kong, cheap rubbish and refunds. No questions asked.

Not £4, anoying but moan, works for me.

read this.

not saying wrong but a cable thing surly, better bet than new external NIC if built in ones on the motherboard, hopefully not laptop.

try keeping away from power leads, worth a go to prove a point.

Ask for another, most are good I find.

It is likely to be a dodgy contact on a single pin - maybe some corrosion/varnish you cannot see or, as I have found recently, the plastic spacer between the pins has been pushed across a little which stops the sprung contact in the socket making contact.
