Dell System Unlock Password (BIOS)

Hi,

I'm experimenting with an SSD (actually Hybrid Momentus XT) using this Dell Dimension 5150 Desktop.

I've adde the drive phsically but the BIOS needs to be told its there.

There is a password set on the BIOS (or System Unlock P/W) as its called.

I've had the PC from new but have no record of it, is there a default one ?

other wise I'll reset it using the jumpeer... cheers

Yeah, just pulled the jumper out and reset it.

Now I have to reformat it and clone it again after my son helpfully switched off a computer "wasting electricity at night" .... that was actually cloning the drive

I hope you are using cloning software which will align or keep alignment of the partitions so the logical blocks align with the SSD block sizes to avoid the overhead of two reads / writes for each block?

I have had a Crucial C300 (I think) SSD for a couple of years now and it is super blazing fast on my Sony Laptop. I would hate to go back to a spinning disc.

Windows 7 boots from cold in 20 seconds or so! Windows just open.

Since I don't have a huge quantity of music or video files stored on the laptop 300GB is more than adequate.

If this won't do the job I'll have to pay for Acronis, I got a free copy with the drive, but it doesn't clone just do back ups you have to pay to upgrade to a version that clones... thanks Ebuyer !!!

DriveImage did not work.

Or at least I can see am identical image using windows explorer but the PC won't boot.

There were a couple of other areas on the drive apart from the C: Drive

There is a 47MB FAT EISA configuration part

and a 3GB FAT32 unknown partition

should I have attempted to copy all 3 bits over ?

I have used Acronis quite a few times and never had a problem with it.

I think because it's the cut down version.

never mind I used Casper XP

free for 30 days, very quick and did the job first time

The Hybrid SSD is cetainly faster than the old disc but not as much as I expected but I read it gets faster as it organises it self

You probably should have installed all three partitions - one is a boot partition, and one a system copy, as well as your Windows system partition.

Thanks, yes, that's what CasperXP did, Acronis just copied over the C: Drive.

All done now, but not a quick as I'd hoped , well it is a six year old Dell
