Do people protect laptop or similar from keyboard marks?

It used to be the case - not sure whether it's still true - that new laptops had a protective sheet of soft material between the keyboard and screen. I understood that this was to stop the screen being marked or damaged by contact with the keyboard, especially when being carried and thus possibly getting squeezed and flexed.

I have to say that I still slip a suitably sized piece of material in when i close up my laptop, though it's as much out of habit than specific recommendation.

Does anyone else do this?

I've seen it, but never done it myself. Currently I've a Dell Vostro 1700 and no marks at all on my screen.

Never done it. Currently use a 6 year old Dell and there are no marks from the keyboard/ It is down to good design in ensuring there is enough clearance.

I have seen plenty of laptops which come from the supplier with a sheet of material between the keyboard and the screen but I have (and others around me) binned them when removing all packing material from the device. I have never come across anyone retaining this.

Certainly amongst older laptops the clearance between the keyboard and the screen was very close and it was common to have the shape of the keyboard imprinted on the keyboard.

All current devices I have seen tend to have a modern low profile keyboard (which doesnt stick up above the palm rest) and the modern screens seem to have much better screen protection as well.

So I don't worry about it!

I should hope it was...

It was common after pulling an all nighter to fix an IT problem to have the shape of the keyboard imprinted on my forehead.

I know the feeling. Sometimes the indentations of a brick well so imprinted as well
