E8400 Core 2 Duo C0 stepping idle temps

Just spring cleaned my machine and using the above cpu and a freezer pro 7 the idle temps are around 50 degrees c, was 60 before clean. Is this about right or do I need to look for more dust?

I think that's fine. Tj max for that CPU is 100°C (or around there anyway). You could of course remove heatsink and re-apply thermal paste if in doubt. Of course all this would also depend on case airflow, too. Personally I think its just fine, if its working, its working.

Working fine and two case fans, one push one pull and a psu fan above the cpu heatsink which is pull too.

50ºC at idle is fine, more relevant is the temperature when both cores are running flat out for extended periods, eg when video transcoding.

I only start to pay attention when mine go over 80ºC under such conditions, but don't usually take any action until they go over 90ºC.

And even that is more for the sake of the PCB and surrounding components than the CPU. As far as I know most are automatically forced (by on-chip circuitry) into sleep mode if they go over about 100ºC anyway, in simple self-defence

That's using a Noctua NH-C12P.

I used to run the thing at 3.6Ghz without any CPU trouble at all, but the occasional BSOD (usually due to aggressive RAM timings, I think) put me off. As the main PC, I didn't want to risk it.

Be aware that the E8400 core temp sensors have a reputation for giving questionable temps.
