Asus GT610 max load temperature

[link to this post]

Following on from the other thread in this forum, I have a little program called Real Temp which has the ability to shut down my PC if the CPU or GPU core temperatures go over a certain limit.

I have a Core Duo E8400 and an Asus GT610. Can anyone recommend shutdown temperatures for these two items. Currently CPU is 90 c and GPU also 90 c but looking at the GPU specs on the nVidea site it says max thermal 102 c. Am I being too cautious.

Oh and BTW it works. My 9500GT (MSI) video card recently went over 90 c as the fan stalled and wouldnt spin up again until I took it out and cleaned it with Servisol spray then some light oil.

Afaik both items have on-chip circuitry which will shut them down if they get too hot, so third party programs are more for peace of mind.

My GPUs are used for mathematical calculation so I have to be careful about the temperature- a slight instability that might result in a pixel being the wrong colour in a game or video doesn't really matter, but a single bit error in a 5 hour series of calculations can be disastrous. So I won't comment on that.

CPU at 90ºC it's high, but should be OK- I think they cut out at about 100. I get nervous over about 80ºC if it goes on for long, but more because I'm not sure about the surrounding components than the CPU.

Might be worth having a look at the fan, I was amazed how much dust mine had picked up recently when I had the PCs apart for other reasons..

You are probably right as when the fan stopped on my 9500GT i was left staring at a black screen when it over heated. I have an Artic Freezer Pro and fan on the CPU which I just cleaned with a vacuum and two 12mm case fans. I suppose the GPU would also cut out on my new GT610 if it got too hot.

Also when I was fitting my CPU heatsink I didnt secure one of the fasteners to the board so the heat sink was not 100% in contact with the CPU and after about 60 seconds into booting the PC shutdown so it must have over heated and shut itself down. I know about the heat throttling but didnt realise about the shutdown routine.

I just like to have a bit of a margin when it comes to over heating, as you say it's the things surrounding the CPU/GPU that can be affected!
