External USB back-up

Looking for recs for a 2TB USB2 compatible back-up drive to replace a Hitachi XL1000 which has (like others) sadly failed. Reliability (and price) significant factors!

USB powered or separate PSU?

If separately powered, I've been using these for some time; I just bought USB2 caddies and mounted them. Not the cheapest by far but they do have a 5-year guarantee.

Thanls, C-M.Was hoping for something a little cheaper - Amazon do Seagate and WD (mains powered) at the £70 mark. A 'stand-alone' is what I need rather than caddied.

What has failed on your XL1000, and do you really need 2TB?

If the hard drive has failed, you could replace it with a new 1TB drive for just under £40. If it's the enclosure electronics that has failed, you can get a new USB 3.0 enclosure for less than £20. For hard drives, I would always go with WD.

Well, pushing 1TB with desktop and two laptops, so might as well! 2 x 1TB would be an option, but I suspect less flexible.

Drive is just constantly 'hunting' and drives show as red in Win7 Disk Manager. Cannot read any files so I think the drive is ***ed.

WD noted. In 'my life' I have had RMAs on both Seagate and WD.
