SSD trim and Windows XP

I've just ordered a Kingspec 32gb IDE/PATA SSD drive for my aging laptop. If I can get it to boot it will run XP from an image that is currently on a spinny Hitachi disk. How can I trim the SSD in XP manually say once a week or by task scheduler?

You cannot manually TRIM. You must let your drive take care of itself through it's garbage collection. The best way to do that? Trust it and leave it alone. Just use it, don't abuse it. Don't kill it any further by writing zeros and ones.

Some tips here although the writer does recommend using TRIM utilities. My inclination would be to leave the drive alone. The CPU is going to be the performance bottleneck, not the SSD.

Good find Mick, I had forgotten about tweak UI and the idle optimization. I have already fallen foul of the bootloader not being present but used Bootit NG on floppy to rewrite the MBR on my spinny Hitachi after a restore.

I have found a SSD utility called AnVil Pro which supports the trim command and also downloaded the Toshiba SSD Toolbox which works for other SSDs.

I suspect you will not get the maximum possible speed with the ssd (given the limitation of no ahci) if you just copy an image of xp on to it as the block alignment will be out...

Additionally trim only works if the motherboard chipset supports it.

I plan to setup the Kingspec on a win 10 desktop, restore the image to the drive then use Aomei Partition Assistant to re-align the drive. Then bung it in the laptop and use Bootit NG to reolace the MBR and boot loader. Sound good?
