So a new cheaper Ryzen is coming out in April, called the Ryzen 5, looks interesting, but now got me thinking of either going for the more expensive 7, or go for the cheaper 5, what ever I get it will certainly be better than what I have got.
Microsoft is blocking updates for windows 7 and 8 on the newer processors, which is to be honest out of order, if people ant to run 7 or 8 on these CPU's then they should be allowed to. i can understand Ms not supporting them, but to block the updates, that is just typ;icle of Ms throwing their toys out of the pram if they can not get their way.

I have heard good things about it, what memory are you using?
i must admit I am still thinking of going for the R7 1700x,

I was nervous about it not booting so i played it safe and went for a single 8GB stick of Crucial DDR 4 2400. I figured it was going to feel a millions time faster than what i had so better safe than sorry, i didnt even go for single rank or a kit to run in dual channel mode lol
I can be a bit more adventuous when the BIOS updates have slowed down and things settle.

I can be a bit more adventurous when the BIOS updates have slowed down and things settle. I was going to ask about stability, but now I don't think I need to. I haven't had to do a BIOS update since I moved from AMD to Intel. Before that, I was doing them all the time, and not because it was a hobby. Some things never change, apparently.

i am looking at getting a couple of Corsair Vengeance LPX of 8GB each at 3200Mhz, I have no idea if they are single rank or not, how do you tell if it is not in the specs?
Getting a couple of sticks instead of populating all four, means I can stick more in at some other point, not that I seem myself doing that.

To be honest with you with just a single stick of PC2400 the cinebench scores on the 1600 are identical to the cinebench scores on the 1600x with presumably better RAM, the test i have seen they got 1136 and mine got 1129

I also moved from AMD to Intel and after 8 years i'm back with AMD.
When i set up my Intel stuff i remember having to do a couple of BIOS updates but after moving from Windows XP to Windows 7 i never had to do anything else the BIOS releases had stopped and as i went through subsequent versions of Windows i never had to do clean installs or owt so having to start again was a bit of a shock.
When i set this up i had the BIOS ready, i thought if that goes belly up i can do it before i have finished not afterwards. Anyway everything is installed and its fine, it is no less stable than my Intel parts were, the only thing i have done is set the fan profiles myself because the front case fan was running too loud.

I have had it running at 3.8Ghz with the stock cooler and default voltages, using the CPU-z stress test it just sat at 57c for an hour with the fans not that loud at all.

Well I have decided to go with the R7, i think it will be the 1700, but I did think about the 1700X, but not sure if the extra cost is worth it.
I will have to have a look and see if I can find any benchtests for all the processors.
the 1700 comes with a cooler, the 1700x don't, the problem is getting coolers for AM4 at the moment, sure you can get free brackets, but companies like Cryorig want proof of purchase for the cooler and the main board and it may takes for them to send the bracket
How noisy is the stock cooler? My FX 8350 have the stock cooler on and is pretty quiet, it is the video card fans that get noisy here.

My PC is on the bench so the front case fan (a 120mm Noctua) around 12 inches from my right ear and the Wraith Spire is silent when you are just surfing etc. My front case fan at the slowest speed makes more noise (a very low hum). Under maximum load when everything spins up it makes some noise but it isn't deafening, i'm running the CPU-z stress test as i write this (processor is at 56.4c) and i still comfortably hear the radio which is 5 feet to my left, i can mainly hear air rushing in to the case because the front fan has spun up, when i walked about 8 feet away i couldn't hear the PC over the radio.
Playing X-Com on the highest settings at 1080p with a lowly GTX 750Ti is runs at 150fps and no fans spin up at all. That said it isn't the worlds most taxing game is it.

My video card is the noisy thing on my machine, it have twin fans and can be a bit loud when it gets going.
I am still trying to decide which way to go, it will certainly be between the R7 1700 or the 1700X, memoryis still a problem, should I go for 3200Mhz or go to the 2666Mhz.
I doubt my machine will ever be over clocked.
I have been looking around the net and getting more confused all the time, would a 1700X give me much more performance for the extra £50, exactly it will be more than that because I would have to get a cooler and would I get any benefit out of going for the more expensive 32000Mhz memory?
this is the problem with the Ryzen being so new.

I have a single stick 8GB of 2400MHz mate, i didn't even take advantage of a dual channel set up and my processor isn't any slower than any other real world benchmarks i have seen online so i cant say it is holding it back any.
Mine is all stock and not over clocked, i only did it briefly to see what it could do, i'd rather have the quiet than the speed lol

Ordered the bits today, gone for a Ryzen 7 1700, 16GB of 2666Mhz memory 2x8GB, gone for corsair and an Asrock Fatal1ty AB350 Gaming K4, it was only a tenner more than the pro 4, more or less the same specs, but a slightly better built board. oh yes and something called Fatality mouse port, what ever that is.
Cost £552 from Scan and that includes next day delivery before 12 and £15 for a 28 day installation damage insurance. I have never done that before, but with the CPU being the price it is, I thought maybe safer than sorry,
I was going to go for the 1700X, but decided not to because of the price for the extra bit of power which is minimal.
What surprised me is that I put the order in and about 10 mins after I had a text to say it have been processed, picked and dispatched. I take it when they say dispatched they mean it is out of the warehouse and ready to be picked up. Still impressive.

Nice one.
I have put an Arctic Freezer 33 on my R5 1600 and i am impressed as my PC is now all but silent. I have the fan set to keep spinning rather than it turning off, i don't like the idea of it turning off ill be honest.
Anyway it is now sat as i type this at 28c.

Should be here today before 12, that is when I ordered it for. Ik will use the included cooler i doubt it is any louder than the fans on the video card, they get pretty loud.
i also ordered a shuttle express, i was going to get the large version, but I do not really need that, just something with a jog shuttle control and some buttons I can program. But that will not be here for a week or so.

Me too, but I have to use it for that to happen.
got memory management problems, just booted into a tester and testing memory, just to see if it is the memory that is the problem. It could be just drivers on Windows 8.1, if I can not solve it then I will have to install Windows flipping 10.
I am using my poor laptop at the moment.
I got pop into town, meeting a friend or two for coffee. then back to sort out machine, maybe I should have stuck with my old one

All up and running now, but only after installing spyware windows 10, well it seems to be working at the moment. We will see.
If it stays stable then I will have to get rid of Cortana, find some decent software to stop MS spying, get rid of the lock screen and get rid of the awful start menu. i have already got rid of some of the apps that Ms do not want us to get rid off.

Mine has been rock solid (ooer) so far for the first month or so at any rate.
I put a GTX 1050Ti in it yesterday so it is a great 1080p games machine as well now. Formula Fusion runs beautifully even at epic settings. i didn't buy it for this reason but the gigabyte windforce card i bought runs passively pretty much all of the time so more lovely quietness lol

What Os are you running on it? Mine seems to be fine with Windows 10 on it, but not with windows 8, I presume it was a driver problem, I will have another go at some point, I really do not want to keep Windows 10 on here.
i am not really a games player, which is why I did not update my video card, i have a Sapphire AMD R9 280, to be honest it is pretty good and unless it goes wrong or I mange to palm it off to someone at a decent price I will keep it.

Windows 10, been running it from day one to be honest
I'm not really a gamer either, just casually play from time to time, the GTX 1050Ti is definitely low end but had more grunt than the 750Ti it replaced. So for encoding and image editing it has to help speed things up with programs that can make use of it.
I got £65 for my GTX 750Ti so the jobs a good'un really.

Its now running with 2x8GB sticks of Ballistix at 3200MHz in preparation for a Ryzen 7 3700x.
I have to say this Ryzen 5 1600 has been a gem over the last couple of years, i cant wait for Ryzen 3000

I stuck another 32GB in mine a couple of days back, so 48GB in total, apart from adding a NvME drive i have not really done much to the hardware until now.
I doubt i will bother updating the CPU, the difference between my 1700 and the new ones will be minimal in real life, no matter what the benchmarks come out with.
sure it will make a difference to you going from your ryzen 5 to a 7, I presume it will be the 7 3000 and not another ryzen 5?
New video card next, but not sure what to get, I do not want to go over board, i looked at the Vega, but it is a lot of money, if one of the lower end do what i need than i will go with them.
Then a new monitor and that should be it unless something goes belly up.

How many sticks is that? Are you getting dual channel speeds? Just curious, because some setups with maxed RAM have to run at single channel speeds, and suffer from reduced FPS.

4 sticks 2x 8 and 2x16, i did have a problem at first, where the machine was running in single channel, windows would not use all the memory and the ram speed was set slow. i took the memory out and changed it around and it worked. But i think the problem was I did not press the memory down hard enough into the slots, so it was half in and half out.
All corsair Vengeance LPX memory and works fine runs in dual channel, proper speed, and Windows recognises it all and uses it all.

Ryzen 3000 relates to the 3rd gen Ryzen processors in general.
Depends what you are doing with it i guess but even the Ryzen 5 3600 is beating the Ryzen 7 1700 in absolutely everything thanks to the significant IPC uplift over 1st gen Ryzen and of course the 3600 has 6 cores and not 8. I know when i am surfing the net etc. it is going to feel zero % faster but when it comes to video encoding and gaming it is looking like some pretty good performance increases are in order.

I know like 2000 was for all second gen ryzen.

A lot of these tests comes from benchmarks and they are done in a way that everything is perfect, in real life it is never the same.
I have seen a couple of articles and the new gen looks good and yes the ryzen 5 3000, seems to be up with the old Ryzen 7 in some things, we will see when it becomes more available and more people can do tests on them.
i am glad AMD is not sitting on their backside and continuing updating the Ryzen.
But I have no plans to update the CPU in this machine for a while yet.

That config should be fine and work in dual channel if you set it up as
channel 1: 1x8 + 1x16
channel 2: 1x8 + 1x16
Basically each channel has to have the same amount of memory and also the dimms effectively mirrored in the slots
