If I try to spec a top-end gaming rig (8700K, 1080ti), with top-end RAM, M.2 storage, PSU, and a really nice monitor, I can get to around £3,200.

In reality, if I was to build a gaming system for me, even with the same top-end monitor, we would be talking £2,200.

I would need to have a very nice water cooling rig, and dual top-end monitors, and so on to get to £5,500.

Depends on what you want to do with, you can spec a threadripper 2990wx with a decent gfx card, 32 to 64gb of ram and and 970 tb ssd for that kind of money ..
