SSD Nvme drives

I am stuck between two ordering 2 NVMe drives. Reading reviews of both one has seq read speed of 1700mb/s and the other has a speed of around 3000 mbps. Here are the two drives.

Reading the reviews both seem as fast as my Gigabyte H310M S2H 2.0 (rev.1) will take but reading the specs the Corsair is the fastest and also has the longest endurance rating. Both have 5 year warranty, WD has Sandisk flash memory and Corsair has Toshiba flash memory.

I have had a Sandisk (30gb) SSD and it failed after a while, just couldnt find the disk but am not familiar with Toshiba stuff. The reviews say that some users have seen temperatures of 90 degrees and the drive throttles itself. These were old reviews from 2018 when the drive was first released and googling MP510 overheating throws up nothing. As they are both about the same price, capacity and warranty I am stuck on which one to order. Note the Corsair only has 4% bad reviews. Thoughts?

Go for a Samsung 970 Pro or Evo Plus. Not cheap but from experience, Samsung SSDs tend to be a lot more reliable than other (cheaper) makes & with high end performance. I have the 1TB Samsung 970 Pro NVMe SSD fitted in my Thinkpad X1 Carbon 5th gen and it runs like a dream.

Agree 100% with the Samsung 970 Evo, I have the earlier 960 and love it.

We are talking another £100 more expensive. That is a fair amount of dosh. Any idea what the warranty is on the Samsung drives? Also some of the Amazon reviews mention overheating.

It's only £67:97 for the latest 250Gb 970 EVO Plus.

Ahh right, Ebuyer is my preferred supplier I was looking at the 1tb version at £145. I also see it is a 5 year warranty the same as the Corsair. So narrowing it down it is between the Samsung £94 and the Corsair £55.

i have got a old 120 Gb corsair force 3 drive that is around 8 years old more or less, It was used as my main drive for a couple of years and since then have been used as a scratch drive for video editing, still working well, I have also got a 250GB, corsair Neutron Sata drive that is around 6 years old and until a few months ago was used as my main drive, now used as a Linux drive. Still going strong. the latest drive is a Corsair MP510 NVMe drive, it is fast Windows boot up in seconds, Reliability I do not know as it is not that old, but if it works as well as the other two then I am not going to complain.

Reliability is pretty good these days for even the cheapest drives, but the technology that is being used is in theory more prone to wearing out quicker, but they are still going to last most users years.

Samsung is no better in reliability than any other, i have heard stories of Samsung going pop after a few months and other lasting for years, the same with Crucial and corsair.

I like Corsair, i have used their memory for years and SSD when they first came out at a a affordable price, that is not to say that I would not go for another make , Sabrent seems to be the new kid on the block and have good reviews. but again reliability is not really known, but like everything else, you can buy one and it is bad, buy another and it is good. Certainly in the old computer world.

if I was going to buy a new NVMe, i would look at Sabrent , they look pretty good.

I have the Adata XPG SX8200 480GB

It's comparable in speed to the 970 Evo 500GB (slower in writes, but faster in sustained writes). Given that the main purpose was for gaming, the reads and occasional sustained (software/game installations and updates) writes were my priorities.

At the time of purchase, the Adata was about £100 compared to £130 for the 970. Prices have shifted since though, and to be honest I'd go for a 1TB or 2TB now. The 2TB Adata is half the price of the Samsung at present.

Similar boot speeds. Five seconds from end of post to desktop.

So I'd go for the one with the best warranty if the prices are within 20% of each other, or the one easily available from a regular supplier.

I have just discovered my board's M2 slot is Gen 2 x2 so max speed I would see would be 1.2Gb/s. I might be better off getting a cheaper WD blue drive which has lower speed but is much cheaper?

Just use a 2.5" SATA drive in that case, short of having no space for one. Little performance diff from M.2 at SATA speed, and a proper 2.5" SATA drive, and far less installation hassle. 2.5" drives are cooler too (less hot, not more groovy ).

I prefer Crucial's MX500 range for £ per GB, and the perf is similar, but was less expensive than the Samsung counterpart. The WD Blue is not so fast in Benchmarks.

Given that you're forced to be at SATA speeds (any M.2 drive you bother will be SATA speed), I'd focus on write speeds, as it will be the slowest part of the storage. As far as I know, they tend to give larger capacities more cache, which will equate to faster writes. In that sense, if you're trying to squeeze every last drop of write speed, the Samsungs will be faster by 3-5% in writes.

If it's price alone, the WD is cheapest, the MX500 is mid, and the Samsung is most expensive. Frankly, you won't see a huge diff between the three most of the time (but WD is 10-15% slower than others in benchmarks), so look to warranty, availability from trusted vendors etc.

Thanks Camie but all my Sata ports are full. I have a crucial MX200 already. Have my eye on a Corsair NVMe MP510 1tb with 1,800,000 MTBF and 1700 TBW @ £104 from Ebuyer. I know I wont get the speed but the endurance and 5 year warranty are very attractive. I need to sleep on it.

One thing. Many mobos have a limit to what can all be used at the same time. For example, my mobo has two M.2 slots, but one is only capable of SATA 3 speeds, and if used, some of the SATA ports are not available.

Perhaps check mobo manual for any sharing between already used ports, and the planned M.2 slot.

Already done Camie, if I use an M2.Sata I lose a port but if I use M2.Nvme in the M2 slot 4 ports remain useable. I spotted that when I first got the manual.

Ok took the plunge and ordered the MP510 from Ebuyer, due tomorrow.

I don't know how many PCI-E slots you have populated on your board, but check that one do not conflict with the NVMe connector.


ii am happy with my corsairs,, if i went for a larger capacity NvME then I would get a case to convert my old one into a USB drive.

LOL, you as bad as me, take ages to decide, but once decided just go for it. I got my monitor and video card from Ebuyer, they are ok, the only thing I don't like about them is that they still use usless Yodel

Good point. There are one video x16 and 2 x1 slots one of which is occupied with an adapter. The other is spare and covered by the video heatsink so one would presume the nmve should have enough lanes.
