I need a small compact USB-2 hub - just 2 ports will be fine, however, it needs to be a powered one rather than taking power from the source port.
Any recommendations on which one to buy or which to avoid?

I'm using Raspberry Pi Hubs, which are powered and have 4 usb2 ports - these have lasted better than others I've tried.
Look at Pi-supply and Pi-Hut sites (amongst others)
