Found a use for my Powerline adapters

My Panasonic PVR wifi is caput. When scanning for networks it just says internal error. It is from 2012 but the tuner and hard drive are still fine.

So I have some TP-Link Powerline adapters sitting on my shelf and think to myself, aha. The PVR has an ethernet socket so I wonder if I can re-connect the PVR to my LAN.

5 minutes later after plugging them in, one upstairs and one downstairs I have a 200mbps link to my PVR and media available on my PC upstairs.

So I updated the Powerline Firmware and have been watching BGT upstairs from the PVR's hard drive.

Interesting to note that when the Powerline adapters are idle my modem's SNR is 3.3dB but when transferring data, streaming, the SNR drops to 1.5dB and then back up to 3.3dB on the downstream when streaming stops but holds sync. Quite a bit of CRC errors while streaming too. Will have to watch that or DLM will be taking action.

Powerline adapters are causing noise to be radiated from the domestic wiring, that is being picked up by the phone line and may even be giving the neighbours a problem too.

No neighbours within 30 foot. BGT was only 30 minute program I could find haha.

Even at 30 feet it could still be a noise source.

More likely to upset Radio Hams, I used power lines and had no problem while using them or my nextdoor neighbour.
I stopped using them because Ethernet is better and faster


Do people still watch rubbish like BGT? So i don't watch Tv anymore.

Anytime someone reports a problems accessing online TV and they say they are using PLA's then I bow out after suggesting they at least try an ethernet cable instead to eliminate them as the source of their troubles,

Banger Wi-fi on his PVR went belly up before he tried the powerlines, that is why he used the powerlines when he realised he had them, I don't know why the Wi-fi went pop on the PVR, maybe the chip that deals with it went or a dry joint in the board somewhere, depends on how old the unit is.


If this was my house and I had the money, I would rip up the flooring and put Ethernet in every single room and stick the router and switches in the cupboard under the stairs. The wi-fi power on my router is just enough to get around the house and into my garden, both front and back, since the since Switch in my front outside light need wi-fi, i forgot about that. I may change that to a switchbot at some point.

Ive been trying to set up a wifi bridge with Billion 8800NL R2 or DSL-N55U to AC68U but neither of them will connect to each other instead of the powerline.

Success. I have wired a N55U to the AC68U and created a wifi bridge to another N55U so I can now use my PVR. Who said those N55U's wouldn't come in handy. Seems the N55U version of WDS doesn't like the AC68U version.

I tried to think of better alternatives for the G but my food glossary wasn't really helping me. Gooseberrys don't seem much better. Garlic? I suppose could go with goats cheese, grapes, ginger? Thinking about it there were probably more agreeable options (but then that may be because I hate gherkins, for people that like them it may be a marriage made in heaven).

Nothing wrong with gherkins with bacon and tomato. Just think of te last BigMac or similar that you had .. slice of pickled cucumber included. Or are you someone who has a cucumber aversion?

Gruyere would be a decent alternate.

I have an aversion to pickled stuff - never been keen on it so when I have something that has pickled cucumbers/gherkins then I remove them before eating. Cucumber is lovely but as I can get fresh cucumbers these days easily I don't feel the necessity to eat cucumbers that have been soaked in pickling liquids.

Just a personal choice, most of my family love eating gherkins straight out of the jar and I accept their strange fetish

Well, you could have the Gherkin plain and unpickled. You tend not to see them for sale, just teh pickled variety. I had planned to grow some but failed to get seeds in time.

That could be quite pleasant but as you say never seen one so never tried one - if anything like cucumber then I am sure I would like them.
