NAS Backup Cloud Storage

[link to this post]

Looking to start backing up my NAS to cloud storage (local backups no longer acceptable), does anyone have any recommendations on which company to use as I have no experience with this.

Will probably generate a backup twice a week and keep about 2 weeks worth before overriding the oldest so will need around 2TB of storage to be safe. Not looking at over paying but don't want to be storing my backups in say Russia. I know different companies use different methods to determine the cost so really looking at paying a yearly flat fee for 2TB regardless of how often I generate a backup to the cloud or need to restore it.

Drop box has one for just under £17 a month for 3TB storage, according to their blurb.,

Once a file is added to your Dropbox, it's synced to our secure online servers. All files stored online by Dropbox are encrypted and kept in secure storage servers. Storage servers are located in data centers across the United States. Additionally, storage servers are available in Australia, the European Union, Japan, and the United Kingdom for eligible Dropbox business users.

i suppose you could use Micrsoft 365 family thing for £7.99 a month, you would have to plat the backup as it is only 1TB per account, but you will get 3TB split between three accounts.

You could go for the single version of MS 365 and then pay a bit more for extra storage.

i have seen this, but I don't know where the servers are based, have a look and see, but the price seems very good.

Called Idrive.com

Myself i still back up to a external drive,

Amazon also usually do deals on 365 Family plans when they do their sales. I got 15 months of M365 family (with free Norton subscription that I will never use) for £46.99 in the Black Friday sales. You can also add it even if you have subscription left so I usually but when I have about 6 months left (Amazon have it at that sort of price at least twice a year - although one of them is the prime day sale so may only be available to prime subscribers).

In total you get 5TB of storage with it - it is pretty cheap cloud storage even if you don't use anything else in the package.

That's by far the fastest/cheapest option for disaster-recovery backups. If you're worried about fire, earthquakes, etc. take the drive offsite and leave it at work (if you work) or with a friend (if you have a friend).

That’s not bad if you can jag it at the right price. I had some promo going with Microsoft 365 with additional cloud storage for a few years but seems to have expired now. So getting 1TB included with their 365 Family sub (6 user). Which last cost me £47 for the last sub online.

Depends if you are comfortable with the traditional grandfather/father/son type rotating backup, and not concerned about dorment threats being activated months later (e.g. crypto locker malware).

One option would be to look at which backup services your NAS supports, e.g. QNAP and Synology have add on packages that integrate with some providers. These would generally be backup services such as IDrive rather than file storage (others suggesting Dropbox/OneDrive).

I backup to my NAS weekly and treat this as "offline" and to a continual cloud service at the same time "online". My hope is that if I get a malware infection/cryptolocker that one of these two will allow me to recover. I'm hoping more of the cloud that it might handle, but they try to offer the "infinite incremental" option, with a recovery from malware type feature (for money) that keeps multiple versions.

Crashplan stopped selling to home users, so I'm with Idrive currently, but still looking for anything that protects my data from these encryption malware threats. (that can stay dorment and hiding encrypting your less-frequently accessed files, so your backups are useless).

I have the 365 single User plan with 1TB for £59/annum so will have to look for that next time they have a deal, I do find that OneDrive is fairly useful for backing up all my data files and my mobile phone, I still use a couple of MyCloudEX2Pro boxes as well for NAS to backUp my system completely using Macrium Reflect GF/F/S backups

I use iDrive, I pay a flat amount a year for the storage. Their servers are in the US, so not all that great from a privacy point of view if you're bothered about that (I'm not). I've been using them since 2016.

It's really for disaster recovery as I do NAS -> NAS -> external drive -> iDrive.

It's not the fastest out there, but it does have a client for my Synology NAS and a Windows client that will do instant backup of a selected folder. I use this functionality to backup my CCTV images and video snapshots.

I had one problem with them about 4 years ago where I couldn't access my backups, it was fixed in about 2 hours, in a disaster I might have been very upset, but as I had 2 other backups it wasn't that big an issue for me.

I have been looking for alternatives as their pricing is not that competitive anymore, but it's a flat rate and the Synology and Windows client make it easy for me smile

Thanks all (bar one) for your responses in this thread.

I have been backing up the NAS for many years locally and will continue to do that but due to a number of factors it has become more important to do an off site cloud backup and follow the 3-2-1 backup principle.

I have got Dropbox on my short list but hadn't considered iDrive as the NAS's backup app doesn't support it by default but having checked the iDrive site they provide a specific app for my NAS that can be plugged into the NAS's package centre so that is looking a good contender. Will add that to the list to do more personal investigation.

Fred - interesting you say about backing up the CCTV, thats one thing I hadn't considered doing as it will significantly increase the required cloud space by over 10TB.

Although I am not a great lover of the Currys/Dixons/PC World empire we have used their Cloud Backup for a number of years. £50 for a one year deal of 4TB storage and up to 5 devices (or £120 for three years). It backs up to a schedule (we back up hourly) and can encrypt your back-up if required. There is also an on-line drive which you can use to access files with other computers/phones rather than the domestic system(s). That drive counts against the 4TB storage allowance. They advertise that they use UK based servers. I'm not sure how it works now but they used to subcontract the back up to LiveDrive (at cheaper prices than LiveDrive charged retail customers).

We have had no complaints or problems while using the back up (or on the few occasions we have needed to restore a file or files).

For the record we have no connection with Currys other than as customers.
