Why?

[link to this post]

I am putting together an old pc, it is pretty old, a dual-core AMD Athon, 4GB of ram, has a EIDE and a floppy connection, so show how old it is, but it does have Sata, just.

I need the EDIE ports, which is why I am putting it together.

Anyway, i noticed the case right-hand panel can't be removed, so the boot drive is just have one screw to hold it in place, not a big thing as I doubt the machine will be used for long.
But why did they do this sort of thing?
The things they used to do years ago to I presume cut costs, the case is from a pre-built machine, something called TCS, so I presume a small PC builder years ago.
The one thing that is annoying me at the moment is the noise of the CPU fan is.
Linux mint is now installed on it.

I just hope the drives I need to get the data off works, I know one of them will only work while upside down smile

Already taken 16 hours to get data off 4 USB drives onto the NAS, another 8 or so internal drives to go. the one that works upside down is a USB drive, but it will not work at all in the USB case.

Oh fun, why do i do these things? To think I got a Mac to make life easier smile

Does the cradle for the hard drive not come out with removing a few screws? Normally with cases where the side doesn't come off it is possible to remove the cradle to properly secure the drive.

Nope, unless I drilled out the rivets, seemed to be a thing if I remember with some cases. Now the drive that would only work upside down is only working on its side smile. Saying that it spent its working life on it's side, but boy is it noisy. Thankfully not a big drive 8GB, but split into three partitions, it is a Seagate - ST38641A - Medalist 8641.
I have the machine working now, it is lying on the floor as I need access to the EIDE and sata.
i also have my old Tape drive fitted in it, but not connected, whenI am done with these drives I will put the machine together properly, tidy up the cables. May find a better suited PSU, as the one that is in it at the moment is way over the top. IU can then stick it beside my other PC and muck around with it for different things, like trying to get that tape drive working. My muck around machine.
But first I must get these drives content onto my NAS. Done the one partition, doing the second one now and so far the drive is behaving.
