How come my USB boots quicker

[link to this post]

On my old Core 2 Duo E8400 on MSI Neo F MS7360 with GT 1030 it used to take about 5 or more minutes to boot a Linux Live USB to desktop. I have shoved a GT 1650 card in there in place of the GT 1030 and it boots to desktop in less than a minute!

I initially put it down to a combination of USB2 and Flash Drive slowness but it cant be as the same setup boots quicker. Any ideas - Grok doesn't know apart from some waffle about a better VBios meshing better with the P35 Bios.

The difference here is likely NOTHING to do with the actual booting.

As you have only changed the graphics card, it is more likely that you should be checking /var/log/messages (or equivalent in your distro) for the reason WHY the driver for the GT 1030 was likely stalling. In the older days we didn't have graphical Linux boot screens so you could see each driver load, and then you'd know what it was so slow.

my guess is the GT 1650 is detected quicker by the driver and returns to the rest of the init.d / system.d sequence. (I don't know what distro you're using).

The live distro is foxclone based on Ubuntu. I tried safe mode when it took ages as a diagnostic and it seemed to be the first items to load which took ages - vmlinux I think and another will have to try again with safe mode but it reaches desktop under a minute.

vmlinux is the kernel loading; and depending what compiled options and modules you have it could easily be the video driver.

As far as I know it uses Noveau drivers (I didn't build it) also Ventoy is a lot snappier when going through menus.

@Banger,

I am currently using Linux Mint on my Asus E510 laptop. I would recommend trying that (Linux Mint). I find it boots very quickly from my internal hard disk.

Yeah I have tried Mint didn't like it. My OS of choice is Solus Plasma dual booted with CachyOS and Windows to play with. The USB is for backups.
