The blue smoke has escaped!

[link to this post]

Well, it looks like I'll be building a new backup server in the near future. My old Athlon XP 2500+ system has let out the blue smoke (and made my study smell like I had a 50 a day habit) and stopped responding to network requests.

I have an old P35 (socket 775) motherboard lying around, but no processor to go in it. Looking at my normal suppliers (Ebuyer, Scan, Dabs) I'm having difficulty getting a 775 processor.

Any tips on where I might get one from. I need it to be boxed (no after-market cooler required, I'll be underclocking it) and very cheap, but not off ebay.

Any tips?

Thanks,

Andy

Why not eBay? It's the best place for ancient hardware.

I haven't tried them, so can only give you the link. The risk is all yours. Failing that you could get a blue smoke refill.

Apologies as this does not really answer your question.

But what about buying a HP Proliant Microserver with the £100 cashback offer still on?

I've got most of the components, I just need the cpu. I want to spend as little as possible, even with the cash back, it is still too expensive. frown

Thanks anyway.

Agreed

Course if you're adamant against eBay there's always Gumtree...

I have used PC upgrade a couple of years back for a p4 motherboard and they was very good, they even phoned me up as I ordered some memory at the same time to make sure that I know what I was ordering as the memory would not fit the board as I did not buy the memory for that board.

so good service at that time.

True, I got a 2.5inch hard drive for my ps3 from there, a pretty good price as well. but they are expensive on some things mind you.
