HO IPv6 roll out started.

The long promised IPv6 rollout on Hyperoptic has now started. I have it and it's working fine. The good news is that Hyperoptic seem to have done a decent job of it.

If you are using the HO provided router you don't have to do anything, it will just work. You may well have it already without even realising...

If, like me, you do not use the HO router, things are still just as good. HO have gone with a very standard (typical) method to provision IPv6 and there is nothing odd or unexpected to deal with. The initial Link Local config is done with SLAAC and your Prefix Delegation can be obtained via DHCPv6. I'm getting a /56 PD, so I assume that everyone else will too.

There is currently no information anywhere that I can find from HO regarding IPv6 setup for those using their own router, so if this is you then all you really need to know is that you can use SLAAC & DHCPv6 PD. A careful search on Google should get you the info you need for your particular router.

Yes, IPv6 is working perfectly here as well. Thanks so much to Hyperoptic for getting it implemented.

The only hiccup I had using my own router is that I was requesting only a /60, but Hyperoptic always seems to return a whole /56. Since in my dhcp6c.conf I was using a 4-bit sla-len that meant that my local networks ended up each assigned a /60 which of course caused some problems. Once I adjusted my sla-len to 8 bits everything just clicked into place.

The only thing that will make it better is if they start offering ip6.arpa DNS delegation (hint, hint) but that's probably a niche concern

What is the timescale on the roll-out? Given it was originally 2017.

Given the mess and restrictions that CGNAT has caused I will be waiting for IPv6 as there is no way I'm paying the rip-off £5/month for a static IP.

Hijacking thread a bit ...

Doe anyone have any details on what one would need to change in the router to get this to work

HO shared me my v6 address which when entered seems to connect, however not able to connect to any webpage with address not resolved error.

i select static IPV6 , but have no gateway details which i reckon could be the problem ?

BTW router is a draytek but reckon there is nothing specific on it's setup

I expect you need to use DHCPv6 and Prefix Delegation on your router to set this up. DHCP should then be providing your gateway. It is important to note that IPv6 will be setup up differently to IPv4 and IPv6 should be natively routed whilst IPv4 will be NAT'd as before.

I have been told my building in E14 will be done in early Jan.

I also have just received a mail saying my static IP is changing on 4th Jan. When asked if it had something to do with IPv6, I was told:

the reason why there is a IP address change is because we are trying to resolve the IPv6 issue. The change it self might enable the IPv6, but if you are experiencing the issues after the 4th January please do let us know.


So I will wait and see what happens.

I've been trying to configure IPv6 on my watchguard router but there's a "Default Gateway" input field on my IPv6 tab which I don't have.
Is this meant to be picked up via DHCPv6 automatically or is it an IPv6 default gateway I can use?

This is weird. Back in December, I got IPv6 enabled for a while, at least that's what most IPv6 checkers such as http://test-ipv6.com/ said. I was even a bale to connect to the IPv6-only sites that were linked from that page.
But since 2/3 weeks ago, it looks like it's gone, since the IPv6 checkers say "You appear to have no IPv6 address."

Does this make any sense, or am I looking at the wrong place?

Thanks a lot, because their CS said that I can't get access to devices from internet due to "Although the IPv6 is static, you wouldn't be able to access it from the internet as it's a security feature".

Are you using HO router or your own?

For security most routers that do IPv6 will have a firewall running, so even if you have a public IPv6 address unsolicited inbound traffic is usually blocked

i.e.

A user on BT will NOT be able to ping you computers IPv6 address even if a public IPv6 one.
You using your computer should be able to the ping IPv6 servers that have their ping response exposed though.

Ok, so looks like conversation is moving towards - whether HO customers should be able to setup firewall rules for ipv6 as they can do it for ipv4 (at least current HO router allows to switch between 3 cats of protection and allow ipv4 pings and most traffic with Low settings).

Otherwise (for me) hiding any ipv6 settings from customers in provided equipment is an attempt to force people into paying £5/month for static ipv4 to be able to be visible from outside. ZTE H298A/N from manufacturer has much more settings available, which are hidden in HO routers.

I believe there are two separate aspects in play here.

I'm referring to one - whether the IPv6 Prefix Delegation assigned by HO to their customers is fully routable or not.

Other posts are referring to another - whether there may be a firewall policy of some sort in play.

Regards the routable aspect, the IPv6 PD assigned to customers by HO (at least, to me) is fully routable. There is no impediment put in place by HO at the IPv6 routing layer to impede access to your IPv6 allocation from the Internet. So, if you are using your own router and want to access your IPv6 PD from the Internet, you should be able to do so.

A seperate issue is that there may be a firewall policy on whatever router you are using that blocks access to your IPv6 PD from the Internet. I don't use the HO router, but other posts here suggest they may well block this by default. I would argue that this is the correct and sensible option for a consumer oriented service. If you don't want that, you can always use your own router instead smile

I hope that's a bit clearer.

I'm having the same problem at the moment - IPv6 was enabled on my connection in the middle of last year, but at some point in the last couple of weeks it has stopped working again. Specifically my router's DHCPv6 client can no longer send the Solicit message it needs to send to get the IPv6 prefix. I've tested various routers with OpenWrt and stock firmwares with the same result. IPv4 works fine so it feels like something has broken with the IPv6 configuration on the Hyperoptic side.

I had a similar experience. I was able to fix it by changing the MAC address of my router to match the MAC address of the Hyperoptic-provided home router. I'm not 100% sure that's what fixed it, though, as the issue seemed somewhat flaky in nature.

I've had to set my router to Native connection type for it to work on my Asus RT-AC86U.

The router FAQ says if the WAN connection type is Automatic IP, set it to Passthrough.

You may have updated it, but it still says nothing about IPv6, which is the whole point of this thread.

Itís important to note that our phone service will only work through our Hyberhub router.


That bit needs updating too.
