Replacing HyperOptic Data Outlet

[link to this post]

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to replace the data outlet box for my Hyperoptic setup, as it needs to be part of a fitted desk and the current one is just a plain white box, I've asked if they can offer any other types but they were unable to do so, can anyone tell me exactly what it is, and where I can buy spares in different finishes, e.g. brushed chrome? I think it looks like an RJ45 data outlet?

Hello there!

We are pretty sure that there might not be different models available with different finishes.

But not to worry, you can invest into another third party router in a fitting colour - our service does not have any known or reported compatibility issues at the moment, so the choice is entirely yours, depending on your household needs and budget.

What we offer is a Hyperhub router, RJ45 Ethernet cable compatible. As long as the third party device in the color you need is RJ45 cable compatible, there's no reason why it wouldn't work with our socket.

We hope this information helps!

Do you mean the socket where the Hyperoptic service comes into your flat? It looks like a standard RJ45 single socket with punch down connections. Technically, replacing it with any other RJ45 socket should be straightforward but you’d need to check whether Hyperoptic allow that or treat it as Openreach do their NTE.

If you just want the faceplate to look nicer then you can just pop the existing euro module out of the white frame and put it into a new plate - e.g. https://www.bgelectrical.uk/wiring-devices/euro-modu...

Then you don't need to touch the wiring.

Thank you for your replies everyone. The item I'm referring to is very similar to that shown in the image at https://cdn.thehouseshop.com/b39e20d1227dbcb8081e0ce... - I don't have the ability to post a photo here - but it sticks out from the wall much further than this, approximately 3-4x as much as a standard socket would. I have some other items from BG Electrical, but I think if I just remove the front plate that won't be quite enough?

From the photo you should be able to pop the socket euro module out of the faceplate and put it into a BG faceplate. A euro faceplate doesn’t cost much so it’s worth trying.

From your description it would appear that you have a (large) surface mounted pattress box rather than one built in to the wall as would normally be the case. Not that surprising as the time and cost of recessing the pattress box would considerably increase the time for installation as well as most likely damaging the surrounding decoration.

Thank you for the replies on this, the help is most appreciated. If I did want to simply replace the whole thing instead of just the faceplate, can you tell me which BG Electrical product(s) would be suitable for this?

Kind regards,

David McKay.

As others have said, it sounds as though it is a surface mounted box if it is sticking out that much more than others. It won't be an easy task. To replace it with a recessed box you would need to buy something like this if it is a plasterboard wall https://www.screwfix.com/p/appleby-1-gang-35mm-dry-l... or this if it is a brick wall https://www.screwfix.com/p/appleby-galvanised-steel-... and whatever new faceplate you want(such as https://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-1-gang-front-plate-ea...

To fit you would need to:
- Unscrew the existing faceplace and remove the RJ45 module
- Remove the eight cables from the RJ45 port
- Remove the existing back box from the wall
- Cut out (if plasterboard) or drill out (if brick) a 7.5x7.5cm square hole in your wall, taking care not to damage the Hyperopitc wire coming into your property
- Mount whichever back box is appropriate, ensuring the wire comes through at an appropriate point
- Feed the wire through your new faceplace and re-wire the Hyperoptic cable to the RJ45 module you removed earlier using a wiring tool (such as https://www.screwfix.com/p/philex-auto-trim-idc-impa...
- Clip the RJ45 port you removed earlier into your new faceplace
- Screw the new faceplace into your new recessed back box
