Came across this firewall, installed it and it runs with minimum of fuss. Named Comodo http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/ Totally free and updates automatically. Runs fine on my XP Pro. very nice interface and easy setup. Well worth a look.
i don't think it will improve pings though.

Well, I hope it works for you, but I've used one free firewall so far (Netveda) and found that you get what you pay for.... it worked OK as a firewall, but screwed up several other programs.
I have the same feelings about free AV software, fwiw

So far hasnt' interfered with anything esle. I have Visual Studio 2005, Macormedia MX suite, Office Xp, and numerous other apps. No problems yet. I love the free stuff but always try to check it our first. No loss of performance either.
It's great having a son who's a software developer, he gets all the corporate stuff so at least its within the license use. Mind you these new easier development environments really screw up my little brain.

I find Firestarter quite easy to use, I am running Linux anyway. It has never crashed.

I read about Comodo a couple of days ago and am seriously considering it: it seemed to get nothing but good reviews. I've always used Sygate, but since Symantec killed it off I've been looking for a free supported replacement

Anything wrong with Zone Alarm free edition or is it too basic - I used to use it?

Just installed it.
A nice balance between Zone Alarm free edition which provides minimal information about what it is doing and Sunbelt Kerio, which can be overly sensitive.
Well worth trying.

I use ZoneAlarm Pro and i've never had any problems... if it's not broke, don't fix it ;-)

Only problem with Zone alarm is that it seems resource hungry.
