First a duff router, now MTU/RWIN problems

[link to this post]

As you may have read, I had problems getting online this morning, due to my router acting up.

It's been replaced, but I noticed from the TCP/IP analyzer here and also by using TweakTester at Netmonitor that my MTU has dropped from 1500 to 1460, whilst my RWIN has gone up from 32120 to 32660. I haven't changed these values, and having been right through the registry, all the settings appear to be as I had them. In case I was on a second loopy router, I swapped back to my 'retired spare', but this gives the same figures. Yesterday I was getting the correct 1500/32120 figures reported.

Am I going mad? Is it a case of deus ex machina?

Sadly, I don't have my main computer to check with, so can't eliminate the computer (except by examining the registry and seeing what DrTCP and TCP Optimizer think are my settings.

Any help gratefully received, it's driving me nuts!

The mtu and rwin are set in your registry file, swapping a router won't change these. I would suggest using DrTCP and set the computer mtu to 1500 (make sure that you select the correct device) As for rwin, you could try dslreports.com tweak test and go for a mid range setting. On the router, you could start at am mtu value of 1400 and work upwards. I think it was on this forum someone mentioned a value of 1430 was satis with Idnet. One of the giveaways for an incorrect mtu is some websites won't load.

Once you have near optimal settings, any further tweaking has little of no effect on speed, so resist any further tweaks. Something that I am incapable of doing by the way.

What routers are you using Rik? I wouldn't worry too much about the MTU and RWIN as long as your connection is stable and getting good speeds. I had to change a default setting on my Netgear router - so could any of the values in your router setup have been accidently reset? Seeing as you have checked the registry.....

Are you sure the issue you had this morning was the router acting up or was your connection down again like mine was yesterday evening which other people here experienced.

Hopefully after the 10 days training period things should be a lot better too. I would ignore the TweakTester at Netmonitor 1460 value... because that's what I got and I know for a fact that two other tests report it back as being as 1500 and I set it in the router aswell as registry.

As for the RWIN, I don't think that going up that small amount will make a noticeable difference in my opinion. Main thing is being able to get online and that could be due to the work that needs to be done on that Cisco router. If I can help I'll do my best, but as you know i've only just migrated in the same as you

As I was just typing this at 17:40 my connection just died and managed to only just get it back up again

I appreciate that a router swap shouldn't change things, I just thought I'd make sure it wasn't the router given the earlier problems.

DrTCP and TCP Optimizer both agree with the values of 1500/32120, but as I said, reports back from test sites, including dslreports, tell me that the figures are 1460/32660. I could understand MTU being throttled somewhere in the system, but I cannot understand how RWIN could be change, unless the computer is doing something silly.

I have tried an MTU of 1430, indeed I used to use it on my fixed-rate, 1Mbps, service, but I've found that 1500 works better for me at Max, but I need to keep the RWIN reasonably small to stop re-transmits.

Maybe it's all BT's fault???

I do resist tweaks, I just have to try and get the best out of my connection first!

Same here... and just before 4 o'clock. Both came back up automatically though, after about 1-2 minutes...

My connection also died at 15:40 for a couple of minutes. I'm feeling less paranoid.

The current router is a DG834G, the spare is a Draytek 2600+ (didn't think I'd ever need wireless then ).

I'm not on a training period, I think, as my settings seem to have migrated with me, eg 9db target noise margin, but then again...

I'm not fussed by RIN going up, I just don't understand how it could do, given that it's a Windows registry setting, and I have checked that every instance of it is at 32120. MTU, I appreciate, could be strangled somewhere along the route. It's just been an odd day with an odd result like this at the end of it. I'm feeling puzzled and, possibly, still paranoid!

I got the 4pm one too, Bill, but was thinking evil thoughts about my router at the time. Adam was out of the office, perhaps he's unplugging us one by one?

Well I wish he'd do it when he's on overtime and I'm in bed

Maybe I was dreaming when I said that Wednesday I was getting the correct MTU/RWIN figures reported back.

Anyway, solution seems to be to adopt Miriam's recommended MTU of 1458, and RWIN to suit the line, in my case 63810. The correct figures are being reported back. From this I judge that there's a packet-size restriction somewhere in the IDNet setup, and that the reported RWIN is distorted if fragmentation has occurred.

If anyone has a better answer, I'd love to hear it. :
