Very, very slow

[link to this post]

Is anybody else experiencing a sudden slowdown? My IDNet service has been perfect for several weeks, with typical download speeds of 7-6 mbps. This morning my speeds were a healthy 7 mbps until about 10.20 am when they plunged to between 1.5 mbps and 640 kbps. I powered down my router, waited and rebooted but the situation remained. Its wired to the master socket, btw. I telephoned IDNet support and have forwarded my BT Speed Test result (below). I note that my usual upstream rate has dropped from 832 kbps to 800 kbps.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 800 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1527 kbps

Other tester: http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/results.php?t=1225970629&v=5461614

Everything is normal here, 2800 on a 3000 profile.

Not great here too.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 6592 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 5500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 968 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

I use to get 20ms ping all the time too now its anywhere from 30ms to 80ms. Not very good seeings that I play with really good players that also have 10ms ping times. It make a huge difference to online gaming. I also seem to get a bit of warping from time to time which I got told is packet loss.
Not very good for the price we pay. Anyone recommend a good gaming ISP because IDnet are not it at the mo. Whens the new pipe?

Ddi the change in performance happen suddenly?

IDNet have been terrific, in my experience. I'm just stunned to be getting less than 10% of the download speeds I was enjoying before 10.20 this morning!

It was OK early last evening but it's been poor since I turned on my pc today. I've not got a problem with my speeds being a bit slow (not this slow though) I just hate latency and packet loss which I have been getting. when I first switched to idnet I was getting 400 to 500KB/Sec download speeds sometimes higher with a ping of around 20ms all the time. This was with an old router, old phone socket and old filters and a 20m phone extension cable to the router . I now have a nte5 master socket with filtered faceplate and a new router plugged straight into the nte5. Download speeds recently are around 200KB/Sec at best and the ping is way higher than I am use to. This sort of ping, slow speed, packet loss is why I moved from namesco. Guess I can wait for the new pipe (in the new year some time but yet to be confirmed) or move get a good 6 months to a year with some one else then most probably have to move again when they become congested too. Maybe it's just you and me seeings as the status page says everything is all good. GW5 by any chance? I've got three different ways of getting free broadband and I choose to pay for this. lol

Problem over!

[re: rootjuiceUK] [link to this post]

Problem over! (I write with a blush.) The problem was pinned down to a dud filter. Ive just phoned IDNet to explain that I wasted their time. Simon was very gracious. If James and Tim are reading this, Id like to thank you for your help and apologise.

I probably dont have to tell fellow IDNetters, but however busy you are it makes sense to test all your kit before phoning support.

On a point of interest, it was an ADSL Nation filter that failed. Other than a BT filter that was found to be faulty on my very first day as a broadband user back in 2002, filters from ADSL Nation are the only ones to have let me down.

We can all get caught out by our own kit - you don't think a filter can affect speed, rather that it works or it doesn't.

The deathbed symptom of the last ADSL Nation filter to die on me was failure to connect to IDNet on reboot. Sync to the exchange was not affected. Give me BT or Excelsus any day. Still, mustn't make excuses...

Your filters decided to go at a good time then because there was actually a real problem. You sure that you never replaced them at around the same time the problem was fixed? lol.

i have seen a problem with the more expensive Clarity faceplate filter.

awful SNR figures, target SNR raised, profile sub-1Mbps, occasionally noise on 'phone line,
replacing router/cables etc did not resolve, eventually traced to apparently intermittent loose connection of ADSL socket on the filter

seemingly caused by the ADSL cable being too tightly tucked under the carpet below, putting pressure on the connection.
