Upgraded to adsl2+ and now getting less than 0.5Mbps

I've been with IDNet for a few years now without problem on the old 8mb ADSL package. My exhchange recently got upgraded to ADSL2+ so I upgraded my package with IDNet to the 24meg Pro package.

It went live yesterday afternoon and shortly after I did a quick speedtest that showed almost 11Mbps download speed. Some facts; I am less than 400 metres from my exchange. The line quality is very good, so much in fact that that when I was on the 8meg service a BT engineer had to throttle my speed down a touch at the exchange due to a line sync in excess of 8meg (dont ask me to explain it any more than that because I can't!).

So, I am expecting some pretty good results on the 24meg service. Now I understand my adsl is currently in 'training mode' that lasts for 10 days, but seriously, I am getting less 0.5Mbps on a theoretical 24meg connection. Is this right? Support have told me not to worry and let the training mode do its thing but I don't know, this doesn't seem right to me being so low when my router is currently line sync'd at 18Mbps. Its been less than half a meg all day. I guess I'm after a little reassurance. Has anyone else experienced this on upgrade or new provider? How long is this 0.5Mbps (or very poor) download speed going to last? How frequently is this going to change? Or is there perhaps a problem? Any thoughts or experiences shared would be appreciated.

I don't know how the training works for your current ISP. Other people can definitely help better here.

But I do know that line statistics from your current router would help us to see what speed you can expect to get

As you can see, less than half a meg d/l speed.

My router is a Linksys WAG54GS running firmware version 1.01.03. Settings as followed;


Encapsulation: RFC2364 PPPoA
Multiplexing: VC
QoS Type: UBR
VPI: 0
VCI 38
DSL Modulation: Multimode (*as advised by IDNET, and this router doesn't like the ADSL2+ setting)
MTU: AUTO
DDNS: Disabled
NAT: Enabled
RIP: Disabled

This router does not show line noise levels. On the 8mb service the router was rock steady, very rarely requiring a reboot.

What's your attenuation?

I recommend you change the router - try a DG834GT or a TG585v7

Nothing to do with any training period. Note the connection speed in the Friday was 17773kps, this one is 826Kbps.

Ask support to look at those. And as BatBoy says, if you have another router, or can borrow one, try that.

This is, without a doubt, a fault of some kind.
The usual suspects would be;
A phone line fault
A hardware fault (either at the exchange, or with your router)
Something else has recently been plugged into a phone socket without an ADSL filter
An ADSL filter

As BatBoy and Robertos have suggested; try an alternative router (if you have one).
It may also be worth doing the usual tricks of trying the router plugged directly into the phone master socket (inside - into the 'test' socket), checking all extensions, swapping filters (using other filters if you have any spares).

Once you're sure it's nothing your end, I'd call your ISP and report the fault (mentioning your current connection speeds - up & down - and try to get through to them the line worked at full speed on ADSL1).

Thanks for replies guys. I managed to get hold of my old Netgear DG834G Vers3 (latest firmware) that a mate had been 'borrowing' for the last 18 months.

Anyway I am still getting wildly fluctuating IP profiles and modem re-syncs that go down to less than 1000Kbps then back up to 18000Kbps. I think my current IP profile this morning is about 1100, this is before the modem switch. I also did all the usual Test socket testing behind my BT ADSL faceplate (My modem actually syncs the same on the test socket as it does using the normal faceplate socket.

Now I have the Netgear up and running this morning heres my settings;

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 17976 kbps 1163 kbps
Line Attenuation 22 db 6 db
Noise Margin 8 db 5 db

The downstream noise margin flips between 7db and 8db and doesn't go any lower. I am not sure whether that 5db upstream margin is cause for concern but its steady at 5db constant.

Do I need to let this modem stay connected for a while so the IP profile can adjust?

Definitely stay with that router and see if it is slable wrt connection speeds.

The noise margin varying between 7 and 8dB is perfectly normal. I would expect it to vary by 3dB or more over each 24 hours. That's why the default setting for BT Wholesale based circuits is 6dB, so there is plenty of spare.

Get RouterStats or RouterStats Lite further down that page and monitor the noise margin and sync with the sampling interval set to 5 seconds.
