BQM

[link to this post]

Hello,
I've been with IDNet FTTP for just over a week, and for the last couple of days have been getting disconnects.

My Broadband Ping
My Broadband Ping

I've rebooted my router (Draytek 2927ax), ONT and swapped Ethernet cable. Support have done a line test and are suggesting swapping out the router. Could someone check my settings and logs?

Thanks, Simon

Looks like it’s authenticated OK and you have full internet connectivity?

Just checking you’re using the PPPoE IP address obtained by your router as the BQM target IP address?

The line has been up for a couple of hours now.

Yes, my static IPv4 address.

So it’s definitely not a configuration issue. It’s a quality / performance issue.

Can you firstly power off the router, then power it back up a minute or two later. Then monitor the connection quality? Also do you have another Cat5e or Cat 6 cable to connect the ONT to the router WAN port - might be worth replacing that too.

Thanks Pheasant, I'd swapped out the cable earlier, but power-cycled the router around 11pm. It took over 10 minutes to re-establish the connection, but has held up since.

That is a long time for a restart so something is not right there.
What speed is your line and how actively is it used?
It looks like it could do with QoS.

Also might be worth checking for the optimal MTU size as 1500 is too much for PPPoE normally.

Baby jumbos work fine for me (i.e. IP MTU=1500, using 8-byte larger frames for PPPoE overhead). Openreach FTTP, Aquiss, Mikrotik router.

In any case, if the MTU were wrong, it would not cause the session to bounce. At worst it would cause oversized packets to be dropped; PMTU discovery would probably deal with it, or else the remote site would become unreachable, but either way PPPoE would stay up.

At the risk of sounding like a support agent with a broken script, have you tried using the router that they supplied you with?

Of course which is why I said optimal. It may work but is worth checking how the Drayteks deal with it.

I haven't used one for may years but remember it was a nightmare getting one to work with a Vodafone Suresignal which came down to an MTU issue in the end.
