Openreach recruitment 9

[link to this post]

Has anybody else on here got May 29th as a start date?

Was originally May 28th but now starting the Tuesday due to bank holiday Monday.

Been told we may have to travel to Yarnfield on the Monday though. Do they still run a full train service on bank holidays or is it more likely we will end up with rental cars?

Cheers!

Hi MMCMME,
I'm starting 29th May as welll. There is someone else starting on 29th May, but can't remeber his/her tag.
Haven't got any details about any travel arrangements yet.
I expect it will be trains. Still running, but reduced schedule I could have 4 1/2 hour train trip (only 2 1/2 hours in car !!).Travelling from East Yorkshire. Where you travelling from ?

Might have better idea when hear from any guys/gals starting 3 april.

Discord Server a bit livelier, if you interested. Good info and banter.

Hi Dougie,

Will be travelling from North Yorkshire/County Durham depending which station they send me to.

Was looking on trains website and looks like a Sunday service.
May end up bumping into you at York station?

Same with me, looks like 4 1/2 hours on the train but its a 3 hour drive....

Will pop on discord when I get 5 smile

Hi,

I start on 18th June. Been offered a job as Fiber Jointer in Infrastructure delivery.

I haven't received any further details with regards to the training. I would be grateful for any advice or information about what to expect over the next couple of months and during the training period.

Many thanks

I start 21st may and am travelling from kent is anyone else travelling from kent as all the people i have read on these forums are from up country not down in my little part of the country lol. i have read some many posts especially from shaved guy who has provided valuable info. I presume each year it seems to change in regard to getting uniform or information on what you are doing on your first day and if you are going to Yarnfield for your first day, it does get confusing lol

Got told I'd passed the video interview on Fri 23 Mar.

Just playing the waiting game now. Eager to get the assessment done and dusted.

I know there could still be a long wait after the assessment, but I think I'd be able to chill a bit more knowing that I'd passed.

Firstly congrats and secondly its perfectly normal not to hear anything they arent exactly quick with updates etc. The info/emails will come and will definitely pick up in the 2 weeks before your start date. Contract email and tasks will likely be within the next 2 weeks and then its sit back and wait.

Congrats and yes they try and tweak it from time to time so some things have changed since I started. The main thing this year appears to be only 1 week at yarnfield for most people and you get some uniform the day you arrive at yarnfield, a pair of trousers, a t shirt and some boots. Then you get the rest in the days after.

If you are interested there is a discord server where lots of new recruits and some existing engineers are chatting.

Yup, patiently waiting here.

Getting the monthly 'we haven't forgotten about you, we're running assessments every week throughout 2018' at the moment.

See lots of the 18 plate vans at hotels around my area, so guess they are putting the current recruits through their training before they take on any more.

I'll leave you a pizza recipe)

1. For the test: mix 1 tbsp. water (40 ° C), yeast, oil, sugar, salt. Leave in a warm place for 10 minutes. Add the flour. Knead the soft dough.

2. Wash the tomatoes. 3 rub the tomato. The remaining cut into halves.

3. Peel onion, garlic, wash, grind. Fry in oil for 2 minutes, pour in grated tomatoes along with the juice. Salt and pepper. Cook over low heat for 10 minutes.

4. Wash the Bulgarian pepper, remove the stem and seeds, cut into half rings, fry in oil for 5 minutes.

5. Grate cheese on a large grater.

6. Divide the dough into 2 parts. Roll out a layer of 5 mm, grease with oil, tomato sauce. Spread the pepper and halves of tomatoes, sprinkle with cheese.

7. Bake at 200oC for 8 minutes.

8. Decorate with washed leaves of parsley

Hi James.
I'm New to this forum and this is my first post.
Congrats on the offer👍Having gone through the recruitment process ending with the Assessment centre in Swindon last week I got the same e-mail yesterday saying well done you have passed the Assessment day. Unfortunately there are no current vacancies. Bitterly disappointed because there were several jobs with 2 different roles available on the day of the assessment ( we were told this by the course presenter) and having received the e-mail I looked on the openreach website and they are still advertising the role in my area and taking new applications. I am desperate to start. I've offered to work further afield and transfer back when a post becomes available. Have you had any further contact?

Thanks James

Hi Everyone,

I have received an email advising I am now being considered for an assessment centre, this was a week ago so I am eagerly waiting the next update smile

Just a question for anyone who used this, on openreach website you can see the jobs you have applied for, I applied for the Openreach Trainee Engineer which I can see on the page, however I can also see a new application which is the same Openreach trainee Engineer however it says Tier 2 at the end of it.

Does anyone know what this means please and fingers crossed for anyone waiting for a reply smile

*Edit* - Found my answer in the discord chat *
Thanks

I just checked mine for the tier 2 but found something interesting..

It says application status - attended assessment centre update Nov 2017.. But I've never been invited never mind been there and just got an email at the start of the month saying still looking and am a priority.. I am aware that you have been patiently waiting for a call up to an assessment centre, as you had successfully passed our online and video interview process.

Thanks

So once you've passed the assessment and you get a start date for training, do you have to hand in the notice to the current employer before the start date and will they start paying you from the first day of training?
Or do you have to do a couple of weeks training before you find out if you've got the job for definite? (meaning no pay for a while).

Not sure on how this works.

Hi mate that's a question for Gav I think.

Technically you're employed by Openreach on the first day of training so you should start earning. I'd imagine you have to hand your notice in to coincide with your start date. Usually the standard is four weeks but it depends on your current employer.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

Hey guys, great forum with lots of helpful information. Just a couple quick questions

1) am I right in saying that the fuel card only works at Esso? Because I live nowhere near any esso garages

2) itís advertised as Monday - Sunday but how many weekends a month do you work?

3) I appreciate you canít use the van out of work hours, but what if I want to go right to the gym/shop from work? Would I have to come home and change to the car?

4) can someone explain the wages please. Iíve seen differing amounts. Also, how do you earn the 10% bonus?

Thanks guys

Hi Everyone! My first post so hopefully done it right smile
Just wondered if there are any other "Mature" engineers applying for Openreach this year?
I have been doing Telecoms stuff for 27 years now with the same company (mostly electrical and engineering setup with a small Comms dept) but always fancied finishing off with a dedicated Telecoms National Like BT
Will be taking a serious pay cut for the privilege but fairly certain it will be worth it.
Any other "oldie" Trainees or am I going to be the black sheep LOL!?

Hi,
On the 12th of February I applied as a trainee engineer on the Open reach website. I submitted the application form with my details. I then received a video interview the next day and submitted that.

I never had to do a situational test which is stage 2 on the website or submit my CV. I also have no way of logging in a checking my progress like others have said on here.

Is this correct or has there been an error?

hello mate, You get paid from the first day of employment, hand your notice in once you get a start date, usually 1 months notice, make sure you complete all the checks such as uniform, bank details, criminal record check and photo i.d, then when thats all done you should get travel documents and accommodation but im still awaiting mine.

are you still awaiting a start date?

Theres a great amount of on job support.
You will be allocated a buddy during training if you need someone to call. Also a training coach. Each team has a senior engineer to call on and theres also a coach on demand number to ring anytime for help.
If the job needs a 2nd pair of hands, you can raise an assist on your jobs app and another engineer will be along to help out.
As you move through training you will also find yourself saving the phone numbers of every engineer you meet. Very handy to build up a network of guys!
You will be working alone but your never alone!

Hi, I have an ongoing application in early stages. If successful I would guess it highly likely training would overlap with a friends wedding which is out of the country. I think they may have had a large amount of interest.
When I first put my postcode to see possible vacancies, the were 9 possible points on the map within 60 mins of me. Now just a week later the are only 3 possible places to apply within 60 mins of me.

Hopefully I will make it, I may have been a bit late applying.

I just received the below email today. I did the video interview on the 11th Feb.

"An update regarding your Trainee Openreach Engineer Application

Dear xxxx

Weíre pleased to tell you that youíve passed our initial screening. Weíre progressing your application for the Openreach Trainee Engineer Programme to the next stage of the recruitment process, which is where we consider your application against others for an Assessment Centre.

Our assessment centres take place throughout the year. Unfortunately due to the high volume of applications we receive itís not possible for us to invite all candidates who reach this stage to attend an assessment centre. We invite candidates to an assessment centre based on how well they have done in the earlier parts of the application process and how much of a match they are for the roles we have available.

If you are successful in receiving an invite to an assessment weíll be in touch to provide further information about the role weíre considering you for and with additional details about the day.

As we arrange hundreds of assessment centres, it does take some planning and there may be a delay in you hearing from us to let you know whether you have been successful at this stage or not. However, we will send you regular updates to let you know if you have been considered for an assessment centre place.

Weíll be in touch with an update as soon as we can. If you have any questions before youíve heard from us please email xxxxx.

Until then, thank you for your patience and well done again on making it this far."

Same here, 9 when applied and now only 3. I am based in Mid Devon.

Could it be that now Openreach is a separate corporation to BT, they may be changing the recruitment process. Many other the other applicants applied on the "BT.taleo.net" site. Maybe they are implementing their own system for recruitment? We could be in the middle of that transition.

Hi Wah.

Does your application status on the career website also say the following? I haven't had an email but mine says this:

Congratulations!  You've passed our initial screening and we're now considering you for assessment centre.  We'll be in touch soon to let you know  when we can book you in.

Hi Phil

I didn't notice this before but when I login to the bt.taleo page it's showing 2 jobs now.

One is 'Trainee Openreach Engineer- Tier 2' and the other is 'Openreach Trainee Engineer'.

On the tier 2 one it says 'application received' and when I click on it, it says 'Congratulations! You've passed our initial screening and we're now considering you for assessment centre. We'll be in touch soon to let you know when we can book you in.' Updated Feb 21.

On the other one (non tier 2) it says application status: completed - updated Feb 21.

Yes, mine says exactly the same on the taleo page. No email though, though I'll probably get one.

I just thought it was a little confusing that your email states they can't invite everybody to the assessment (fair enough) - But the Application Status part of the applications says they will let you know when they can book you in. Which gives the imrpession that applicants are definitely going to get an invite to the assessment centre.

I wish everybody goodluck either way!

On the BT Taleo page, you'll have your main application. If it progresses to the next stage, you'll have two. One will say 'Tier 2'.

Sure no problem.
It started with an induction, itís really telling you about Openreach and the benefits for working with them, it takes around 20 minutes. After that you are split into groups where you will do maths and English tests, they are a mixture of difficulties, I donít think it effects your chances too much itís really just so they know what level you are at. Then thereís 2 separate interviews. There is also a practical test where you wire some Openreach equipment, itís not really trying to do it in record time or anything itís more to see if you can follow instructions. The interviewers are really friendly and helpful, they want you to do well as itís all at a cost for them to get you to the assessment Centres. In all honesty the video interview is the most difficult thing to do. I hope this helps and good luck!

I've just had this email:

Thank you for contacting us.

we have launched a new campaign now and do expect to have all finalised locations signed off by early March.

Once we get the finalised plan from Openreach we will start planning out where and when our first set of Assessment Centres will take place.

Please bear with us as we do have huge number of candidates on file and we cannot guarantee to call up everyone to Assessment Centre immediately Ė it does very much depend on where our new vacancies will be and which locations are Openreach priority to fill first.

Kind regards,

Openreach Recruitment team

Because of this I can no longer go on holiday as planned and have to lose £1k. The organisation could of been better.

Been reading this thread for awhile and thought I would add my process just incase it helps anyone, I applied for trainee engineer position at the start of Jan, two days later sent link too a video interview. Thought it went average but got an email two days later saying I had passed and was on a waiting list for an assessment day. Two days later again I got invited too a assessment day in Bedford in February, not sure on exact date but it's was a Tuesday. Assessment day was a practical, Maths and English test, colour blind test followed by two interviews, I really recommend wearing a shirt and tie because you really stand out if you don't. After the assessment day I got an email through the next day saying I had passed the assement day and they will be in contact with next steps and a proposed start date. The following week I missed a phone call but then received a email offering me the role of Frontline engineer starting on the 29th of April, should get my contract around mid March time! Very excited and quite a fast process for me! Would be happy too answer any questions about the stages I have gone so far as this thread really helped me prepare smile

Yes I'm on Tier 2. Maybe a couple more weeks yet. Though I do see Openreach vans everywhere in Liverpool, hopefully they need more staff!

Hey guys.

Wondered if anyone is birmingham based? I applied on Feb 11th, got an email within an hour offering video interview, submitted that on 16th Feb. I have Tier2 on my BT page but itís saying application received but when clicking it says congratulations youíve passed and weíre considering for AC weíll be in touch when can book you in.

Does that mean Iíve passed or theyíll be looking at my video further?

Hey.
It would suggest you passed the Video Assessment, and now you will go onto the next stage of being invited to an Assessment Centre. At this you will first have a presentation delivered, and then in some order do a practical test/colour blindness test. Maths & English Test and two interviews. Hope that helps.

Just joined the forum

I applied on friday 22nd feb and heard back on monday 25th to say id been successful and will need to do a video interview, didnt get time to do the video untill sunday 3rd of march. Thought i compeletly messed it up but checked my emails at lunch today too see an email saying i'd been accepted for the assessment centre and should expect a call or email. Got home from work at half 6 to notice i had another email at 20 to 5 offering me dates for the assessment, went to book and everything had been booked up.

Called up and spoke to someone who said he would pass my details on so if anyone drops out or a space becomes free they would call me, if not they would call when a assessment centre becomes available. Anybody in the same boat/been in the same boat, have any idea how long i could be waiting?

But when I check my job application on Taleo it still shows booked into Assement Centre, and showing as not been updated since 12th February. Can anyone advise? Cheers.

Yeah they send you an email with a link with dates, on the email it stats in bold "the assessment events are popular and spaces may be booked on a first come, first served basis."

I've emailed them to see how long i'd be waiting and the response is "The assessment centre dates come to us from the hiring managers depending on the needs of the business at that time. Unfortunately, we wouldnít be able to give you an estimate as to when this will be but as soon as we receive some dates we will be in contact via email." Personally im not too fussed as i thought i had messed up the video interview and didnt expect to get to the assessment stage so will be now a case of constantly checking my email too book myself in.

So heads up for anyone that gets an email for assessment centre make sure you book yourself in straight away( if you see it in time). Im not sure how many dates were available in my area as they were all booked within 2 hours.

Just received the standard congratulations email too. The one that basically says we'll be in touch at some point and to be patient.

Yeah, that's the email I got. So, relief at passing the video interview (on my 2nd attempt) but still the uncertainty as to whether or not I'll make it to the next stage. I'm just hoping that seeing as the few of us in this area seem to have had our video interviews passed quite quickly that it suggests we are one of the regions that Openreach have deemed a priority therefore a high demand for trainees in the near future.

I'm in Montrose. We spoke briefly on the Discord group just before it died.

I wonder if any of you guys can help me?

I completed my video interveiw on the 1st Feb and I am yet to receive a reseponse, any response.

It's pretty clear to me that despite an apparent backlog (Merseyside area) I have been unsuccessful on this occasion.

So the main question I want to ask is, is there a rejection email they send at all or is it common practice for Openreach to simply not reply to unsuccessful applicants?

Kind regards.

I 1st applied last July and failed the video interview. An email was sent to let me know though so they don't just ignore you. I could be wrong but it sounds to me like you are just in a geographical area that isn't being treated as a priority at the moment. I know there are others on here who have had a similar wait to hear about their video interview. I'd be very surprised if you don't hear something from them soon one way or the other buddy. Good luck

12 months? Are you sure? It's usually a 6 month period before you can reapply. Either way, sorry to hear it went the way it did mate. Maybe see if you can get some feedback on where they think you fell short this time so you can absolutely nail it next time round. Could be a good opportunity for you if you play it right. That's what I did when I failed my video interview last year so I understood better what they needed me to demonstrate so this time round I passed it.

I'm not sure where our local assessment centre would be (I'm in Montrose so assume I'd fall in line with guys in Dundee). I know there was at least 1 in Aberdeen last year even though I missed out on it due to failing the video interview. TBH, I'd happily travel anywhere for it. Yeah, I read that too but with applying early in the year there should still be jobs available for everyone who makes it to the assessment centre so I'm not really worried about that. More concerned about getting selected to get to the AC and then not making a tit of myself lol

Saying that, even if there wasn't enough jobs to go around for everyone who met the grade we/they would just get the 'we'll be in touch when there's a suitable position' email. Would just take that wee bit longer to get a start date.

I'm from Ayrshire and emailed the recruitment team as I had done my video interview on 1/2/19 and received this response.

"Thank you for contacting us.
I have checked your application in our system and it shows that you are still awaiting to be scheduled for an Assessment Centre.
We have launched a new campaign now and do expect to have all finalised locations signed off by mid-March.
Once we get the finalised plan from Openreach we will start planning out where and when our first set of Assessment Centres will take place.
Please bear with us as we do have a huge number of candidates on file and we cannot guarantee to call up everyone to the Assessment Centre immediately - it does very much depend on where our new vacancies will be and which locations are Openreach priority to fill first.

Kind reagrds,
Openreach Recruitment team"

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if the assessment centres were already underway or not so this is kinda reassuring. It's probably safe to say that those of us who have passed the video interview at this point are likely to be called up for the 1st assessment centre in their respective areas thus giving us a stronger chance of a quick start date if successful.

Then again, I could just be talking complete nonsense but that logic makes me feel more confident at getting to Yarnfield sooner so I'm sticking with it lol

I wonder how many of the 30,000 actually made it past the video interview. IMO that will be one of the most, if not the very most difficult part of the whole process. At least for me it was the most nerve wracking thing I've ever done in any application process lol

Haha
It's funny, when I did the video interview last year (and failed it) I pulled out all the stops... Fresh haircut. Clean shaven for the 1st time in over 20 years and pretty much scripted all of my answers. I think I just came over as completely fake.
This time I made the decision to just be 'me'. Electric razor stubble, hair that's overdue some attention, and avoided any preplanned answers and just let it flow naturally, even if that did involve a few "ummmmmm"s and eyes drifting off to the ceiling lol. Looks like I made the right choice though. Still didn't stop me treating the 'Start Interview' button like it actually said 'self destruct' though. Never been so scared by a button in my life lol

I seen that someone who had been to the AC was told only 38% got passed the video interview. So weíre doing not bad so far Iíd say! That was my first ever video interview and reckon I definitely came across as nervous so I know what you mean! Iíd be more comfortable sitting face to face with someone than a video interview haha.

Iím the same! Done my video interview at the end of January and havenít got any response since. Ended up emailing them at the end of February and basically got the same reply as you but they also told me I passed my video interview, however didnít receive an email to confirm I passed which is odd. Hopefully we all get a date for an assesment centre constantly checking emails every 2 mins lol

Hi Happy, took my AC in Sevenoaks on 21st Feb, told would hear result within a week, 2 weeks after and a phone all I got told I passed and would hear more soon. Called last week, no news, talio says "booked into assessment centre"! Called again yesterday for an update, she says, "I can see you passed, not sure why no news, I will nudge the area recruitment or something" a few hours later I get an email with a start date of 5 months away, August! I accepted the offer and asked about an earlier date and happy to change location, but that is the next date available at Yarnfield.
Call the recruitment number mate, good luck

Have you looked at your Taleo account? Does it have a 2nd application listed with 'Tier 2' against it? If you see that, click on 'Application Received' and you should see a message confirming that you have passed the video interview

Hi Audrey,

Thank you for contacting us.

We would like to inform you that there has been a technical issue regarding the video interview feedbacks but the team is working on it now so we would like to ask for your patience and understanding. However I can confirm that having checked the system you passed the initial screening stage and now you are considered for attending an assessment centre.

Please bear with us as we do have huge number of candidates on file and we cannot guarantee to call up everyone to Assessment Centre immediately - it does very much depend on where our new vacancies will be and which locations are Openreach priority to fill first.

Kind regards,

Openreach Recruitment team

Hi all! I applied for the trainee engineer role on Monday afternoon and within about two hours had received an email saying I had been invited for a video interview. I have held off from doing it as I do not interview well at all and have failed miserably in recent months to land jobs as I crumble under the pressure when I get a question that I do not see coming.

I really would like this job probably more so than any of the others I have applied for and I really donít want to balls it up. What sort of questions should I expect on the video interview, did you guys who passed it throw a shirt on or anything like that? Any help appreciated. Cheers

[re: Fletch859] [link to this post]

Hi Fletch. Shirt and tie as an absolute minimum. Just treat it like you would any face to face interview. Don't rush into it. When you log into the Sonru app it doesn't just make you do the interview right away. There's a bit of info to read about BT and a couple of videos to watch too. Watch them as it will give you a good idea of what Openreach want to see in a candidate. There's also the option to do practice interviews to get used to talking to the camera. Do lots of these. I don't know about you but I felt really nervous and silly talking to the camera like that. Doing the practice interviews can really help overcome that. Keep in mind that they want to see the real you. So don't try to hide your personality from them.

One thing to keep in mind that might take off a little pressure is that even if you do fail it, it doesn't mean you'll never get the job. It just means a 6 month wait then try again. That's what happened to me. Messed it up in July last year, learned from my mistakes, reapplied this year and did a better job. Best of luck to you. Let us know how you get on.

hi all, been keeping an eye on this forum for a few weeks now so thought id share my experience so far.

Location: North East England.

I applied in Feb and was instantly invited to the online video interview.

Completed this early Feb.

12th Feb "Tier 2" role appeared in my BT Taleo page stating "Congratulations! You've passed our initial screening and we're now considering you for assessment centre. We'll be in touch soon to let you know when we can book you in."
(Note i never received any email to this point saying I've passed)

27th Feb - I sent an email asking if there was any update.

4th March - Recieved the following reply:
"Thank you for contacting us.

we have launched a new campaign now and do expect to have all finalised locations signed off by mid- March.

Once we get the finalised plan from Openreach we will start planning out where and when our first set of Assessment Centres will take place.

Kind regards,
Openreach Recruitment team
"

That is where im currently at.
My worry is im flying to Malta next week to view and plan my wedding and wont be back till 27th March so hoping they dont message me this week asking to come in to a center the following week which i have seen in some posts.

I wish I knew. One day I was in it, the next I wasn't. Don't know if some of us were just kicked out if the group or if the whole group has closed. Shame, it was a really good source of info and it was good to be able to get to know (if only online) other trainee engineers.

So, i've been lucky enough to be invited to an assessment centre (after 3 years of trying!). I Got tripped up at the video interview last year - found it weird, this time round I bought a more expensive webcam and tried to inject some of my personality which is difficult considering I find it easier to talk in person where you can gauge a person's reactions and bounce of them etc.

Anyway, my assessment centre is on 29th in Preston (I had to cancel my holiday to go to it!) and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on what to wear? Email says "Smart casual" so I'n thinking shirt/trousers/dress shoes. Do you think a tie is necessary? My understanding is that adding a tie becomes too formal but maybe I'm wrong?

I know a suit would be overkill and perhaps even go against me on account of being unable to follow instructions

When I went I wore smart trousers, smart shirt and shoes. A few others wore ties and 1 in a suit, they were defiantly in the minority. Go smart, no tie or suit needed. Be comfortable and don't worry, they put you at ease.
