Apple chief executive Steve Jobs is being treated for a "hormone imbalance" but is staying on as the firm's head.

In a statement, Mr Jobs said he had been suffering from ill health for a number of months and had been losing weight throughout 2008.

"Doctors think they have found the cause: a hormone imbalance that has been robbing me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy," said Mr Jobs.

I believed he was ill when he was a no-show for the keynote. The question is whether this announcement is just more spin ? Is his health going to deteriorate further ?

I suspect he has a thyroid problem. That makes you either put on weight or lose it, depending on if it is over active or under active.

In PR terms both are very strong statements that would most certainly lead to criminal proceedings if they proved to be false.
