OS 9.2 Fresh Install Help

I have a G4 which is quite old and needs a fresh install. Trouble is, when I try to do this I get something like a 'mount the disk error', ie it can't find the disk to install to. Does anyone have any suggestions that I might try please?

You have tried repairing the offending disk with Disk Utility? If it's backed up then try repartitioning it.
