VLC rip no, MTR rips the region code to 0.
Why do you need your drive region free.

Me was irritated about that too - so instead , since I don't like fiddling with things , bought a cheap personal DVD player to watch my DVDs from other areas [ USA and Ukraine ]

I had the same problem, I watch a lot of anime which never gets released in the UK and since I want to support the struggling industry I tend to buy box sets from the US. My powerbook wouldn't play region locked even using VLC and there were no firmwares available so in the end I bought a new drive and spent many hours stripping my powerbook to replace it. Glad I did in the end but what a serious PITA. I seriously seriously hate region locking.

I've got a region-free DVD player so I can watch without problems, it's ripping that causes the aggravation
