iMac fans

The cooling variety tongue

Do they do anything?

I've been running HandBrake for nearly 36 hours now, with both cores maxed out according to Activity Monitor, and nary a whisper from the fans...

There's a slot with some cloth across it on the back of the case at the top. You'll feel heat coming out of that.

iMac's and all non Mac Pro machines use laptop parts. CPUs and 3D chips. Hence low power and heat.

The iMac is the only machine that I can leave on that even my wife can't claim to hear it at night. Nice.
