Best way to have mail forwarded to Mac Mail

[link to this post]

Could anyone inform on this one please?
After ignoring Mail for a long time - using H.M.com and Lycos - now having a rethink - prompted by the reported imminent withdrawal of the free Lycos service from europe (supposed to disappear 15.2.9 but still working today) have now set up a couple of addresses in Mail by way of Zen's facility.

Problem: Can send and receive at new addresses - can also, by changing configuration at Zen end, have messages fowarded on to H.M. But what I want to do is have messages from H.M. and any others automatically forwarded to Mail.

H.M.com? Are you talking about Hotmail?

Forwarding is a function of the system that originally receives the mail - you'll have to look at the options in your Hotmail account. I think you'll find that you can only forward to another Microsoft address; live.com, msn.com, etc.

By far the best is to set up your Hotmail as a POP3 account in Mail. Settings here (If you're using Safari you might get a security certificate warning - you can safely ignore it).

This page says that a subscription 'plus' account is needed to access POP3 - no longer true - it's now free.

Remember to uncheck 'remove copy from server' in the Mail prefs advanced tab if you still want to be able to access your Hotmail the old way smile

Thank you lct that looks to be a solution - although I have the old hotmail.com address rather than hotmail.live.co version - still can always set up a new one - just a bit of a pain notifying all contacts of the change of.

I see you are on Zen as well so perhaps you would be kind enough to advise on another problem I encountered while setting up mail addresses in Zen?

As I said the two addresses set up already are fully functioning, but having a problem with a third address I set up on my wife's macbook which has leopard as opposed to tiger on my powerbook.

Set her address up via Pref>Accounts on her macbook and used identical configuration (apart from name) when adding the address via the Zen Portal. Her Mail box can now receive from all sources but it is not possible to send anything out.

Be grateful for any advice on this.

There's an option called Connection Doctor in Mail's Window menu. It attempts to connect to all the services you have configured, and provides additional diagnostics when they fail. Have you tried that?

Yes have tried that Alan.

Zen Mail Account :"Trying to log into this POP account failed. Please make sure username and password are correct."

mailhost.zen.co.uk: "Could not connect to this SMTP server>Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, uncheck the "Use SSL" checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences."

Tried all of those to no avail - been in touch with Zen Tech and given them the details - waiting for them to get back now.

Thanks for taking an interest. Will post when I get it sorted out!

Don't do that - many of the the old MSN hotmail accounts were automatically 'upgraded' to Windows Live and some had to be upgraded manually - either way, your old hotmail address should work.

Try going to http://mail.live.com/ and logging in with your existing address and password. It should either work as normal or offer you the option to update your account to Live. Your address shouldn't change.

Once you're on Live (if you aren't already) the previously suggested POP3 solution should work fine.

Re your wife's Zen sending problems, sounds like her SMTP settings - is she on the same Zen connection as you or is she connecting the MacBook via another provider?

Thanks lct and Alan for advice.
Wife's email working ok now. Ended up removing first attempt and starting anew.
My guess is that the problem of not being able to send mail out was due to attempting send out before the email address was fully activated by Zen. They say this can take three to four hours. When the 'premature' send out failed this resulted in a default to mailhost.zen.co (Offline) and stuck there. Everything is fine now though I'm pleased to say!

The Hotmail link lct provided took me straight to my hotmail.com account box. It looks as if it has been upgraded to hotmail.live.co style but address remains .com as you said.

Will have a go later at setting up forwarding from the hotmail accounts and let you know how I get on.

Thanks again for your help.

Just a quick note to say hotmail messages now being transferred to Mail without problems. Used link lct provided. Works fine receives and replies from Mail as needed retaining original hotmail address.
Should add that I did try the http mail plugin from Daniel Parnell, but could only get this to work one way. Thanks for the advice and suggestions.
