Guys - advice needed

Software update is bugging me about the latest update for iLife09, Aperture etc

About iLife Support 9.0.2
This update improves overall stability and addresses a number of other minor issues. It is recommended for all users of Aperture, iLife 09, and iWork 09.

Now I do NOT have iLife09 ,or iWork 09 don't used Aperture , don't use the iWebstuff so do I need it ? If not how can I stop [ permanently] Software update from bugging me about it ?

I have iLife 08 and kept getting this. I have installed it.

To stop it. Launch software update and highlight it if it is not already and select from the menu - update and click ignore update from the list.

See if there .pkg files for those apps in /Library/Receipts. If there are move them somewhere safe (just in case ) then run SW Update again.

Since you installed it , Boots , has it caused any problems ?

t t - nothing in Receipts other than Adobe Acrobat

You were looking in your 'home' folder instead of your harddisk/Library/Receipts.

Ummm - yes - but only found the Adobe stuff Should there be more ?

Absolutely! I have 94 in my HD/Library/Receipts folder but only one in my Users/Username/Library/Receipts folder.

OK - just looked in my Hard Disk receipts

me got 253 !!!

Only 38 in mine on the laptop, but the folder takes up 415MB of drive space, more than half of which is in a single file in the db subfolder (a.receiptdb)... which only the installer has permissions for!

I wondered where all that backup activity came from after a trivial update

Interesting compared to mine.

72 items in receipts and yet the DB is only 98.5MB.

Hmm. I'll have a look on the iMac when I get home.

I see that some programs have several receipts. Front Row for example has three; I'm wondering could the earlier two not be deleted?

I've got five for GarageBand and I don't even use it . I'm quite happy if you want to delete old stuff and report what happens

I wonder if it's possible to force a "sanity check" on the update history... it's not a vast amount of HDD space, but it's not negligible either

106 items and 640 MBytes here.

a.receipt.db is 384 MBytes, and the boms folder is 129 MBytes. The biggie in boms is com.apple.pkg.XeroxPrinterDrivers.bom at 32 MBytes. I don't have a Xerox printer.

The largest .pkg items are iWork 09 (11.2 MBytes) and iWeb (10.4 MBytes)

I've no real idea what would happen if you deleted some of the items. I know the contents of this folder are used when repairing permissions if you ever do that; and they *may* be used to determine which updates you haven't applied yet during Software Update.

Surely only the last should really be needed. If you miss one that is necessary you are warned that it is missing and are closed without updating.

Well after a clone I deleted all the extra Apple updates. Receipts now total 50.

We'll see if anything untoward happens.

Run SU and it just shows one item that I've not yet installed.

OK - so bearing in mind I have many many more than you [ there's a lot of updates from Neo-Office :( ] how do I know which I can remove ? the total comes to 644MB and it seems that I have mixed access to this little lot

On the iMac there's 34 items (twelve for NeoOffice ), total 430MB, the db file is 250MB... something cock-eyed somewhere

I've got that file too, on the iMac and the Macbook. And I've never used a Xerox printer either

I don't have a Xerox either .

There must be some way of removing some of these - if not the folder is just going to keep on expanding . Rooms getting tight on my HD - I need to get some stuff off

I've removed all but the latest NeoOffice receipts. Too early to comment yet.

I noticed that if you check the update history, only Apple software shows up... nothing about all the NeoOffice updates.

Nor do any of the Opera updates show, either in the history or as .pkg files. Odd.

Software Update is an Apple application, and it's only interested in updates to Apple software. I think you'll find that listing is the same as the one in /Library/Logs/Software Update.log

All installer scripts that are based on the Apple Installer create receipts that their own updaters can use to determine what's been installed where, but I don't think there's any standard utility to browse the entire receipts database. Maybe someone has created a 3rd party receipts database viewer?

I would be reluctant to try deleting items in the Receipts folder, given that there's an opaque database file in there that may get upset, or have to be rebuilt at some stage.

Fair enough about SU only being for Apple software, but why is the db so big? At 250MB (on mine) it could damn near contain a copy of all the update files

And why does the NeoOffice installer put a pkg file in there without deleting the old ones, and Opera manages to keep track of the version without putting anything in there at all?

Mailsteward puts a pkg file in there as well btw, but nothing else I've got does... why?

Glad to hear that. I'm just trying to describe the situation, not explain or justify it

I've managed to repair permissions and all seems to be working fine.
