Macbook illuminated keyboard

I've got an early 2009 Macbook and have changed the keyboard backlight option to timeout after 30 seconds. It works fine except when you are running anything full screen i.e. VLC, youtube. Anyone got any ideas?

Also what's the lifetime of the LED's in the keyboard - I guess longer than I would have the computer for no doubt!

100,000 hours seems to be a common figure.
