Iphone 3GS screen scratch resistance

[link to this post]

I had an original 2G iphone and quite often ended up with phone and keys in the same pocket, and when i got rid of it the screen seemed free of scratches. I am going to get a 3GS and would like to know if the screen on these are as scratch resistant, or do i need to buy one of the many scratch resistant films that are on the market to protect it.

All the hype says that the 3GS has an oleophobic screen coating, which means it repels finger marks. Putting a protective cover over it would eliminate the benefit of this coating. I can't imagine that Apple would have softened the actual screen material, though repeated scratching may remove the magic coating over time.

FWIW, I have two trouser pockets (not including a hip pocket for my wallet), and I have trained myself into the habit of putting hard objects like keys, pens and coins in one pocket, and my 3G iPhone in the other pocket along with soft things like my hankie and any odd bits of paper I find myself carrying about. It seems to work.

Thanks for that, i agree and usually keep keys in jacket pocket, but for some reason, when loading vans at work, the keys seem to always end up in same pocket as the phone.

Some complained that they thought the 3Gs screen scratched more than the 2G.

I would imagine the 3GS's coating is applied to the glass not part of the glass itself. You might scratch through to the glass underneath which would be very obvious (different brightness levels).

I've had my 2G iPhone since the original US release (2 years ish?) and it's not got a single scratch on the screen! The rest of it's looked pretty knackered though :/
