Browser problems

[link to this post]

Guys I'm having problems with one Site using both Safari and FF [ both BTW are up to date ]

Normally I use FF with the Plug ins of

Default plugin 2.0 [ gecko default plug in
Flip4Mac windows media plugin 2.2.1 2.2.1.11
iPhotoPhotocast 7.0
Java embedding plugin 0.9.7.1 and MRJ plugin version 1.0-JEP-0.9.7.1
QT plug in 7.6.2
Real Player Plug in 0.0.1d1
Shockwave Flash 10.0.22

I also have AdBlock Plus , NoScript and a few other addons - Forecast Fox is one but since I have already uninstalled them I can't now remember which [frown]

The Site has a lot of Graphics - www.acrod.org

When I open it in either FF or Safari I get the Site but with a HUGE amount of white space and then when I scroll down eventually I get the page . All drop down menus at the top are there.

Trying to clear up FF I have now managed to mess things up completely and can't log into another Board whatever I do . At present I'm using Safari since I suspect that I'm going to have to completely trash both FF and Safari and then re-install from scratch. Snag is that if I'm thinking correctly , I'm going to have to install another Browser first so I can download my preferred Browsers .

So questions are

1) OK I drop both FF and Safari from my Apps into the Trash

What else do I have to find and delete - I need to get everything out to allow for a new set up I think.

2) suggestions for another Browser please .

OH and a 3rd - not really connected I think but I have been told by a PC user that I really should be shutting my MB down every day - this I seem to remember is NOT so - confirmation of this would be helpful.

Hmm. Displays fine with me even with noscript active.

Have you tried disabling your plugins in sequence?

The simple shift-reload?

Or clearing your disk cache?

1) OK I drop both FF and Safari from my Apps into the Trash

Should be.

I have been told by a PC user that I really should be shutting my MB down every day

Rubbish. I never shut mine down - and the maintenance scripts run unattended in the small hours.

Well - I'm still in a mess

This is what I did

Trashed FF , shut down MB, waited for a few mins, Booted up , fired up Safari and downloaded FF

THEN trashed Safari , shut down MB , waited a few mins , booted up , fired up FF and then downloaded Safari

After the MB re-booted . Fired up FF again and guess what my HOme page was Virgin and everything was as it was before including the mangled Acrod Site.

Where are all the other bits of FF [ and Safari since it was the same ] ?

I know that some stuff is elsewhere , like my prefs etc . So where are they and what am I looking for ? I know they need to be trashed to remove everything about FF and Safari so I can have clean installs for both.

I really would like to get this sorted tonight . At the moment FF is unusable - I can't log into anything there , and since Safari is still not coping with that Site , I need to get it straightened out too.

Finally managed to dig everything out and I now have brand new shiny installs of FF and Safari . Just about to start setting them up - and this will be a slow job I'm certain , but I'll get there over the next few days.

What the problem was I've no idea , but there was a clash with something - so I'll add all the usual things in very carefully indeed - and gently too - one at a time .

In between successive runs of Time Machine might be a useful schedule to follow tongue

now that is a good idea smile

Brand new clean shiny installs are OK

BUT when I changed the FF skin to the one I've used seemingly forever [ iFox Smooth ] and set Virgin Media as my home page , put in 3 Bookmarks and OOPS - here we go again frown

Now have nice new clean install browsers , no add ons , no themes , no Bookmarks and all is well.

This is not fun smile
