Safari - search engines

[link to this post]

Why is it that with any other browser, I can pick and choose what search engine I want, yet with Safari I can't? This only applies to Safari for Mac OS, because on Safari for Windows you do have some choices. I am not a Google fan, and really don't want to play the multi-browser game by having more than one browser on the computer. I just would like to make a choice of what search engine I want to use, not be told what I must use.

Could this be one of those Apple back room deals that tells us what is the best for us?

There is nothing stopping you navigating to any search engine.

On the search box, I would guess that Apple's position is that the overwhelming bulk of their users are happy with Google (pretty much in line with the overwhelming bulk of all web users) and they choose not to increase interface clutter (although the various bits of gossip re Bing suggest this might change).

Or you an go with a smoke-filled room theory. 'Cos Apple and Google are getting on so well at the moment.

Firefox gives me a choice that I hardly ever use - and then just for IMDB and occasional dictionary searches.

Bummer about Snow Leopard. As it was such a nice add-on when I used it before Safari 4.x, as you can see here. http://www.recipester.org/Recipe:Change_Default_Sear...

I doubt that it's a back-room deal - just a typical example of Apple's "you'll do what you're told" policy.

Use something like this:
http://www.bjorgul.com/
Maybe set it as your home page.

As Going_Digital suggests, Glims gives the option to add a plethora of search engines to the search box. Many other useful features too including auto re-open last session no matter how many windows/tabs one has open.

One little setting I like is the ability to set 'comma' & 'full stop' to skip through open tabs.

Give it a try,

Yes it is, a prime example of how not to design a web page.
Maybe there are others available...
