iPhone Charging?

[link to this post]

My iPhone 3 Gs was showing on the display that it wasn't charging this morning. Fine.

I then plugged the phone into my PC, and left it in all day. It still never took a charge.

So, I tried a short while ago back in the wall socket charger. Still nothing charging. I tried another 2 cables. Nope.

I'll phone Apple in the morning. It's not even a full year old (eleven month maybe?). Bummer. That is until I plugged into my MacBook. Now it's charging!? I know that I was told (here) that there may be some 'strange' PC & Mac going-ons. crazy

Is this the start of the Mac / PC shenanigans here?! laugh

It has started getting warm underneath it tonight. I just checked it as I hear the fan (or HDD?) spinning.
It IS quite warm underneath. I don't want it setting my duvet alight lol. Never noticed it this warm on my lap sitting on the chair.

Such is life. crazy

Sounds like a faulty wall unit and a PC with under powered USB ports (too many ports on the bus).

If you have an Apple Store nearby, book a genius appointment and get it checked over (the charger, not the PC).

Thanks for that Ian.

The PC has a kilowatt PSU and I have never had a problem with anything being un-able to work, or charge, before. Very strange.

There is (I think?) 3 Apple stores nearby. Well, two nearby, and one that I know of in the town (Glasgow). The charger isn't an Apple however. I'll just buy another one. It was a cheapo anyway as far as I remember.

My PC has 6 USB slots on the front of it, and 6 at the back. Hmm.

==== PROBLEM SOLVED!! ====

I just took the USB extension out of the equation and WOO-HOO, It worked!! The cheapo charger still works too, as do all 10 USB ports. Thank gawd for that!

Thanks again Ian. Faulty USB. Not my Mac, PC, iPhone. Phew! wink

*guesty breathes sigh of relief. smile

You like a lot of connectivity don't you wink

USB extension out of the equation

Ah - I've had a similar issue with a hub (I think it is failing - my satnav won't mount reliably either - suffice to say I only connect the hub when needed now).

Lol, yes, it's the way that it came - Scan built it well. It may only be 4 on the back.

My older Scan PC has 4 USB ports at the front (side), but only 2 were usable - the other 2 were used by the floppy / card reader. My k/b & mouse are wireless and needs USB for the bluetooth. The iPhone uses USB. It was a pain before. The ones at the rear was not convenient to just swap or plug in.

I had a 4 port hub before, but, it did have problems. It's the way of the PC lol. crazy

You can of course use a powered USB hub I use with my MacBook pro and it works fine with charging iPhone etc.

Cheers - good to see an Apple thread smile

Hi, could you please post a link for the powered hub?

Won't do any harm 'looking'. wink

*hides wallet - for now!

TIA.

No need for that, they're cheap.

First shot at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ex-Pro-Port-Powered-Metal-su...

but there's plenty around, I think my (unbadged) 4-port one was about £6, three years or so ago.

Yeah, mine is a powered Belkin - just getting a bit elderly and temperamental so I don't really trust it so much now (a friend had his Mac mini fried by a dodgy powered hub).

Thanks for that one.

I'll still look into one though. Maybe. Just wouldn't get the £5 Belkin from Amazon (had at least one bad user review).

Much appreciated Ian. Ta.

Thanks for that, Bill.

Wouldn't buy the very, very cheap one[s] after reading an Amazon user review for one, which was seemingly under-powered. ooo

Horses for courses... if you've only got one or two devices that get their power from the USB port, there's not much point in buying a hub which can provide full power to all ports simultaneously.

Only you know exactly what you want, choose (and pay!) accordingly smile

I could use a 27" iMac with all the goodies added, but sometimes common sense has to prevail frown
