How exciting! I've been watching the videos of iWork for iPad and it just might sway me to buy one. I want to know if it's possible to connect (3G) to O2 APN MOBILE.O2.CO.UK with username bypass and password = password if anyone gets chance to try it. Currently O2 doesn't allow PAYG SIMs to bypass image compression and since they're not doing a contract SIM...

Could quite easily jailbreak iphone and setup adhoc wifi network for the ipad to connect to. its even possible to do it without jailbreak but im not sure on the details.

Plan B for me is to get the X1 router for my modem.

Had a good play with one today (in PC World of all places) and now have the basic WiFi only 16GB model. Not bad at all, in fact typing this post on it now.

Me too!
I had fun getting a SIM out of the Apple store. They wanted to connect me to a new contract Maneged to get one though, walked to the Vodafone shop and just swapped the SIM card numbers over on my existing dingle contract and had service on the new SIM in a few minutes.
This would make a massive sat nave for the car

Hmm dingle contract. Think I need to be careful with the typing on this thing.

I queued for 2 hours yesterday morning. Bought the 32gb 3G version. Got the 3 10gb sim. I spent a staggering 30 minutes on the phone to 3 customer services trying to do a credit check having to explain to a fairly nice Indian lady that she kept getting my details wrong! Eventually the credit check passed and I have to say that I am very impressed with 3's 3G speeds.
As for the iPad, well I have made love to it in every way possible........simply put.....I LOVE IT!

I couldn't resist and found myself at the Apple Store after work. I went with O2 and discovered it's not possible to use the iPhone trick of connecting with the APN and username that allows removal of image compression. Not being able to bypass the proxy also has a big effect on speed - a quick test reveals 2.5/0.3Mbps (iPhone) versus 0.9/0.3Mbps (iPad). I'm going to change provider - what speeds are you getting with 3?

Is it using idata.o2.co.uk?

New one browse.o2.co.uk for the iPad. I called O2 Tech this morning to confirm they will not be offering the option to bypass the proxy at this stage but it might be something they will consider later. I cancelled the next payment so going to try something else.
I could just connect to my VPN each time I suppose - bypasses compression.

That sucks.
They may lose sales / money if they don't sort that out.
Let's see what happens when the new iPhone 4.0 and/or OS 4 is released.

I'm not sure they will. O2 are the only operator that do not require a credit check in store (according to the Apple guru). Vodafone and Orange all require you to wait around whilst they do that. I can imagine most people will go for O2.
Vodafone uses the same 'internet' APN as they do for every phone and device out there and speeds are very good.
I'd run a speedtest but ironically I don't live in a 3G area and using my Access Gateway would be cheating

O2 are the best here. When I first got a sim-free mobile I tried every operators sim. O2 was [still] the best here, so...
I fell out with voda years ago. Hated them ever since. Really crepe cs.
Not in a 3G area myself. It's a wee bit annoying, so just use the wireless at home for the iPhone.

What is the issue with having a credit check?
|
|
|
Some people don't like having them, or might not pass them.

I tried to get a 3 contract a while ago when my O2 contract ran out. They didn't send me my SIM so I assume they didn't want to give me one.
Most other networks are a rip off, there's hardly any 3G coverage where I tend to be the most. But 3 are everywhere since they have no 2G network.

It gets recorded on your record and can in some cases make applying for loans or credit harder in future.

II believe two within a six month period is considered normal.

Not liking to have one is kind of tough, it is almost always necessary in order to get credit.
And not passing one is generally a good sign that one should not be given said credit.

And the point I was trying to make. If O2 don't require you to have one (a data only SIM carries little risk compared to a full data/calls/text SIM), they may get more signups.
Every one I saw in my local Apple store was getting connected to O2 - so that may be why?

Or it could be that O2 are a decent provider?
Or you may be right and they may well be the "sub-prime" of the mobile phone world.

I doubt it, a friend of mine couldn't get an iPhone for ages since he was certain O2 wouldn't give him a contract. Of course now they're on other networks he can.
|
|
|
Who knows. Lets hope that O2 get their data problems sorted, otherwise that is a lot of unhappy iPad owners
Matt

they're not doing a contract SIM
You can get Simplicity for iPhone - or are you looking for something else?
Edit: Er, obviously, iPad != iPhone. It's too early for me!

I notice that PC World still have it on sale in quite a large number of their stores. Surprising - I thought they would all sell out on day 1.

Given their sometimes dubious levels of customer service, especially when it comes to Apple products I think people are staying away from there.
Can you not remember the story where a laptop bag handle snapped and they refused to replace it as it was being used to carry a Macbook pro? they claimed it wasn't Mac compatible as they're too heavy compared to other laptops.
