Yes, but the companies could put a lot more into it.
It's coming...
Panasonic has announced the market introduction of the DMR-BS850 and DMR-BS750 Blu-ray Disc Recorders
They've been pushing them on TV adverts recently.
It's not even that - there can be a lot more put onto the disks Bill, more content, even more definition, and more realistic graphins in games [for example]. The developers just don't put in as much effort / cash into it.

Pity.

You can author blu-ray with Toast, or an AVCHD dvd. I have a blu ray burner in my mac pro, and can author blu-ray discs with footage from my HD camcorder

I'm not bothered about authoring blu-ray and (@Guesty) I'm not a gamer, but I'd like to be able to rip blu-ray movies etc into iTunes...

Even being able to play them on the Mac without an external drive would be a plus!!!

I| totally agree with that, Bill.

I've the BD stuff on the PC, but it would be handy for the MBP.

Yeah, but having iLife stuck in the past, only being able to do *standard* definition discs when the world is increasingly going HD sucks. Sure, it can be done with alternatives, but iLife is a showcase app for the Mac.

Obviously if you're editing HD for yourself then that's fine, you can just play a HD mov. But how are you going to supply that to your folks if they don't have Apple TV or a computer hooked up to their TV?

I don't know but I was responding to your comment about not being able to author blu-ray, not about the lack of ability to do it in iLife - which you didn't make clear.
