iWeb Help

[link to this post]

I recently created a Website using iWeb which contain four movies, each one on its own web page. The files for each movie are large, between 60mb - 110mb. I published my Website to my MobileMe account to preview for any problems and to get feedback from colleagues. One movie, and not the largest file, does not download and only shows the Quicktime icon when the page opens. At one point, after a considerable amount of time, it would open with Firefox, but never with Safari. The problem does not exist with iWeb - when I publish the site to my desktop everything works as expected. I have spent literally hours with Apple's MobileMe online chat support where I was connected with Senior Advisors. Eventually, the problem was passed to Apple's engineers. Last week I was notified that due to my inconvenience Apple were offering me an extension to my account by three months, thanking me for my patience and that the case was now closed. That's great, but no solution, no explanation and the movie still doesn't download. Not at all a satisfactory outcome with Apple.

I'm hoping someone might have a solution or be able to point me in a direction that might resolve the problem. The quality of the movies is extremely important. I have always intended to publish to an FTP site and I am wondering whether this might resolve the problem. I would be grateful for any and all advice as this has now been going on for weeks and publishing my site is overdue.

With thanks.

Hi there.

I am definitely no expert, but will ask the simple stuff - does your Safari have quicktime installed & enabled?

Is there any way you can make the files into a smaller format, but keep the quality - after all, you can get HD [for example] on youtube and it's smaller downloads?

The clever folks here will keep you right, I just thought I'd try a wee bit. I know nothing.

QuickTime .mov is actually a container rather than codec - is the movie a QT creation of a native codec (look at movie properties) or does it play locally because you have a QT component installed (such as the Windows Flip4Mac)? The next step would be to examine the website file structure on your iDisk for broken links - sometimes when moving local files around after publishing iWeb can lose track. The simplest way to check that is to delete the site from iDisk and republish. To test if the movie file will stream, upload it to a web server (not MobileMe) then open the URL in QuickTime locally and save as a reference file to your Desktop. Open the reference file to start the stream.
