Mac Mini 2.26C2D HDD to SSD upgrade

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I currently have a stock 160gb* HDD in my Mac Mini and am thinking of upgrading the HDD to a SSD drive in the near future, along with bumping my RAM from 2Gb to 4Gb, or even possibly 8Gb.

Now, I'm looking at 64Gb or 128Gb drives at present, but am literally bewildered with all the options out there, from Crucial, Transcend, Kingston, Samsung, etc.

Does anyone have any opinions on which drives are better?
I'm going to be using the SSD for a boot drive and all my personal stuff will be stored on the NAS.

Thanks in advance. laugh

Specs: Late 2009 Mini (2.26GHz Core 2 Duo, 160Gb* HDD, 2Gb RAM)

EDIT: *stock HDD is 160Gb, not 120Gb

Nothing to see here.. Move along, please

Look for the write speeds. SSDs are blindingly fast for read (my Macbook Mini - a Dell Mini 9 - boots in a matter of seconds with it's RunCore SSD). In use, there is not that huge a difference, though. SSDs -even fast ones and the RunCore is fast for a PCI SSD - are often painfully slow on write and you'd be surprised just how much writing goes on with your boot drive because of the use of virtual memory by the OS and all sorts of other things. The lack of TRIM functionality is Mac OS doesn't help here in terms of optimising performance. I suppose we will have to wait for 10.7 for that.

Hi Desmond,

Thanks for the reply. smile I'll go away and look into the write speeds, as you suggested, before making my final choice.
