Connect my Mac OXS to my TV

Hi all, need some help, I have bought a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor, and a HDMI cable , I connected it all together but all that appears on TV screen is the Display Background from monitor, any suggestions.

Have you told the Mac about the second monitor, and how you want it used?

Sys Prefs => Displays, set up resolution and arrangement as required.
