Switching from Powermac to iMac

[link to this post]

Hi folks

Need to make some space at home so going to switch from a 120GB powermac to a 80GB iMac, problem is the powermac HD is nearly full. I use a 500GB external HDD for backing up. Most of the space is taken up by iTunes music and photos. Any tips on the best/easiest way to set things up so I can access these same files and continue to backup would be much appreciated. I've been using Superduper for the backing up, never used Time Machine so maybe I'm missing something there?? Thanks in advance for any help folk can offer.

You could partition the external into two one part for backup the other for media ie music and photos.

Migrate your docs and stuff you need from the pmac to the imac, but not the photos and tunes. Take the 120GB HD out of the Powermac and fit it into an external firewire/usb case. Point itunes and iphoto at the libraries on it and delete as much other stuff as you want to create space. Continue to use the 500GB as a backup.

Assumes you use iphoto ofc but I hope you get the drift.

Thanks for these tips - I have partitioned the ext HDD previously, thinking that when the itunes/photo folders get bigger I would keep them on one side of the drive. I had wondered if its possible to create three partitions on the one drive, but then agin if I did and it failed I've lost it all??!

I hadn't realised you could remove an internal HD and set it up as an external one - I'm a total beginner at this! Is it an easy task to do that? What do I need to look for if getting a case to fit it in, is any type or make of case going to work?? Thanks for your patience!
