To back up my 500GB MBP.

What's recommended ihardware wise?

Any USB hard drive will do you. Just make sure that if you buy a drive that doesn't specifically state "OS X compatible" on the box, that you format it correctly using Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder.

Also, remember Time Machine is your friend.

It's got me out of a deep hole on a few occasions, I'd almost go so far as to say it's an excellent reason on its own for getting a Mac

Yep, same here. I learnt my lesson a while ago, when I was using my old B/W G3 400 (ooer ) and lost almost 45Gb of MP3s. Now I back up to TM and have another copy of my files backed up to my 2x1Tb NAS drives, using Super duper.

Can you tell me how to make bootable backups in SuperDuper on NAS drives? I can't get it to work.

Unfortunately, I don't use my NAS drives as bootable volumes, purely as standalone backup drives.
I have, however just done a cursory google search and unfortunately, it seems that making bootable backups to NAS drives isn't an option in SD, according to the posters here.

Consider Time Capsule, it's easier.

Or a MyBook studio edition, it has firewire 800, so it's faster than the rubbish that is USB2.

Similar backup programs are available for most other OSes, so I wouldn't let that be a deciding factor.

You can't create a bootable volume on a NAS drive no matter what software you are using. You need a directly-attached drive for that (although it might be possible to boot from an iSCSI drive - I haven't actually tried that with OS X).

Drive ordered earlier today.

Just chipping in to say Time Machine is Amazing. Used it several times, for a complete reinstall from back-up to the odd file. Other OS's may offer their own back-up options but Time Machine is bloomin' brill.

I got my mini drive in today - TimeMachine used successfully with it straight out the box.

Firewire 800 used.

Happier now.

Hi, it is a G-Tech G-DRIVE mini (Gen4).

It'll do for now. I'm just pleased at backing-up the MBP.
