iPads

[link to this post]

got a chance to acquire an iPad 2 [ WiFi only ] but for my own needs have some questions - remember me technoidiot laugh

1) Can I install my present Office for Macs [ 2008 ] on it ? Have a lot of stuff in Neo Office and Office for Macs 2008

2) Can I put DropBox on it so I can access files when offline [ they are in Open Office , and as above ]

3) Can I put Aperture 3 on it

4) Will my present me.com email work when iCloud becomes the default soon ? Present MBP is still on Snow Leopard. I'm a bit twitchy about the move to Lion/Mountain Lion after the problems with printers at the time of Leopard [ have just bought a new HP Photosmart 6510 e all-in-one and it works wirelessly which is a joy]

Guesty - any others ? I need answers pretty quickly

Thanks for all help / advice

1. No. But Pages for iOS only costs a tenner and can import

2. Yes, no prob

3. No, but iPhoto for iOS has just been launched and costs about £3

4. When MobileMe closes you me.com will become avaialble to use on iCloud, if you do not just migrate them (which needs Lion, alas - am in a similar situation)

**Edit: sweeps error under carpet**

1. If this is Mac software, then no, you can't. Apple have got Pages, Numbers, etc specific apps for the iPad. Mac program's don't work on the iPad, you need iPad specific apps.
2. Dropbox have an app that works very well on the iPad, so yes.
3. See the answer to 1.
4. I don't see why not - the iPad has a mail program which works very well

As others have said, no you can't use Office or Open Office on an iPad. (Well you can by remotely accessing another computer, but that's another matter.)

TBH, you wouldn't want to use an application on an iPad that needs a significant amount of keyboard input (unless you invest in a wireless keyboard).

You could always look into Microsoft SkyDrive if it's a matter of wanting to view Office documents rather than edit them.

Edit: The good news is that your printer works with an iPad!

OpenOffice format files aren't read by iOS versions of Pages/Numbers etc.

IBM has Lotus Symphony viewers for iOS (iPad and iPhone) for OpenDocument files.

I'm starting to get a wee bittie concerned frown

Snag really is that the files I'll need to access from my DropBox are prepared [ mainly ] on a friend's PC using Open Office and then proofed by me on the MBP and returned to the dropbox folder [ which we share ] We both need to access this all the time - oh and stuff is in it in Cyrillic too .

The idea for a degree of shared use on the iPad is beginning to look a bit of a no-no frown

No idea on the Cyrillic, but ODF format is the issue. (apart from IBM, hardly anyone uses it in business, so there is little to no money to be made in a cheap app).

Otherwise QuickOffice will do probably everything you want; apart from the ODF format!!

OK update smile

Have an iPad2 WiFi 32GB from the refurb store - pleased with it smile

MBP is , as of this morning , on Lion - download easy - a few hairy moments during the install and it took aaaaages for Mail to organise itself but all is now up and running , Neo-Office muttering darkly about crashes - but that can wait to be dealt with - yes I do save frequently so hopefully that will be OK for a while . Office 2008 seems happy and the printer still works as it should.

Next thing is to deal with the compatibility of document going to DropBox , I really want to be able to use the iPad to save me carrying hard copies of stuff [ like 40 page booklets we have prepared in 2 languages ] We may well end up having to PDF everything .

Thanks - but I think we may still have a problem -

We are using a PC Lappy using Linux and Open Office , and Cyrillic Fonts are used

a MBP using Neo-Office and or M$Office 2008 using cyrillic fonts as well

And Dropbox into which we both put files [ we are working 400 miles apart ]

He can read all files in the DropBox no matter in what Format and no matter who put them there . While I'm on the MPB I can also read everything, whether he put them on or me .

The problem is ONLY when I'm using the iPad . If I put The Lotus notes reader on the iPad will it let me open the Open Office / Neo Office/ M$S documents whilst they are still in the Dropbox ?

I know i"m being a bit thick about this - but I'm getting confused frown I'm not intending to do more than a few posts on Fora or write e-mails while away from him on the iPad

Yes it should and the IBM Lotus Symphony viewer (nothing to do with Lotus Notes btw) is free too. Give it a go - you just tap on the file in the Dropbox app on the iPad, and it will open in any associated app. iOS handles all this for you.

well - the problem was solved easily smile

All docs were prepared on either the MBP and/or the Linux lappy and passed between the MBP and the Linux Lappy by way of dropbox for proofing etc . The final document was then exported to PDF by whichever of us was the final proofreader and it could then be read with no problem on the iPad. I think the biggest document was a mere 28 pages long and bilingual to boot !

The iPad proves a resounding success and was in truth a Godsend
