How to backup iphone contacts?

anyone know how to backup iphone contacts? well this is my first time using apple products and I¡¯m kind of like an idiot, hope you don¡¯t mind my silly question

You need to download and install iTunes on your PC. Once installed connect your iPhone to the USB port on your PC using the supplied cable and synchronise between the two.

You don't necessarily need iTunes - you can back up the iPhone to iCloud without iTunes. It doesn't let you access details of your contacts in any other way - but you can restore the iPhone and contacts if need be in future.

Go to Settings- -> iCloud -> Storage and Backup and turn 'iCloud Backup' ON.

True but iCloud has been experiencing a lot of problems recently due to the amount of usage and data volumes. I certainly would not completely rely on it and would rather have local copies of my backups. It also needs to run under IOS 5.x

The OP did not mention which model iPhone they have.
