MacBook won't power on properly

I haven't used my MacBook for a while and the battery had gone flat. I charged it up again and now when I turn it on I get the Apple logo, the spinning cog and a progress bar. It goes so far then shuts down again.

Any one know how to get past this?

Try these first.

If they fail try starting with command and R pressed to bring up the recovery partition. Try didk utilities first. Then check the startup disk and make sure it is set correctly. If all that fails you'll need to consider attempting a reinstallation from the recovery partition.

Cheers Des. I went through all of that and ended up having to reinstall. No bad thing as it was slowing down any way.
